What does "locked for Shared Use" mean, exactly?

I've got a file in a SharePoint library that I'm trying to move to a new folder in the same library. But no matter how I try to move it, I get a message that "this file is locked for shared use," by me. But I didn't do anything to lock the file.

How did it get locked, and more importantly, how do I unlock it? Properties, Details, and similar have been unhelpful, and the old turn it off and turn it on again didn't work either.

    The file is open by you or someone else in a browser. I found this out because had the file open in a different tab for viewing and comparing changes I was making.  As soon as I closed the tab thus closing the file I was able to upload my changes.  I tried it twice because I couldn't believe it.

    But please do repro this issue on your end and respond.  This is a very common issue with my users too.  There is not predictability.

    I think  it's hard for level 1 support here to repro an intermittent bug like this. From the many reports about it, it's clear it's not related to check out. Most likely it's another symptom of Msft's lack of expertise in the cloud storage space -  I don't think they've figured out co-authoring and a whole host of other authentication issues properly yet. So this needs to be escalated to a higher level that can dig into the why  of why it might happen. Since that won't happen here, I suggest everyone who experiences the bug submits a service request so more competent engineers are made aware of the problem.

    I was able to solve this same problem quickly this way:

       1.  Open document

       2.  Click Share button in top right corner

       3.  Click Copy Link icon that appears at bottom of pop-up window

    I was then able to move/delete the file no problem.

    Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for your reply.

    Since Checkout was not required on the site library. You can try the following steps.

    1. Clear your Browser Cache and Restart your Browser.
    2. Clear your cache in Credential Manager. Here is an article for your reference: Clear Your Cache in Credential Manager.

    If the problem still persists, we’d like to confirm whether this problem only happen to the file in one library.

    About the error message, you can also refer to this article:

    The file {filename} is locked for shared use by {user}
