The problem occurs under any front and any zoom I am using.
I just updated Office 365 to the latest version (1701) before posting this question and the problem still remains

I have had this same problem for months. On a Lenovo Yoga laptop, 64 bit version of office, World version 1708.
Extremely frustrating issue, on top if an already frustrating piece of software.
I also have had this issue appear repeatedly over the past few months. I am currently working off a laptop with a second monitor connected. When dragging the microsoft word window to the second monitor i notice the cursor disappears over the italic text, however, when i drag the window back to my laptop monitor, the issue is no longer present.
My laptop screen resolution is 3840x2160 while the external monitor is 1920x1080.
I also notice that by restarting all microsoft office programs the issue temporarily disappears. Hopefully this information helps find a solution to this problem which appears to date back to 2013.

I've had the same issue on my Dell Latitude notepad (Intel HD Graphics 620). It's definitely connected to the display scaling.
I had scaling set to 125%. I changed to 150% (recommended value), signed out and in again, changed back to 125%, signed out and in again, and the cursor is visible again over italic text in Word. I suspect the problem will recur, so this is only a workaround and not a fix.
I too have the same issue and I'm using an i7 Surface pro laptop with "Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640".
I use a lot of italics in documents and this bug is super frustrating! A solution would be most appreciated.

I have the same issue and have the Intel HD 620 and NVIDIA GeForce 940MX. I'm using a bluetooth mouse M325C. I have an HP Spectre 360 with Windows 10 and everything is currently updated. Please advise if a solution is available for this.
