Microsoft Word attempts to save to Sharepoint instead of local drive

Hi,

When I open a document in Microsoft Word (Office 2016, 365 Pro, Windows 10) and attempt to save it using the F12 save-as function, Word attempts to save the document in Sharepoint, even though I open it on my local drive. I could previously fix this issue by unchecking the "Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open" box in OneDrive options. However, this behaviour still happens sometimes. Upon further investigation with a Microsoft support agent (case number 1XXX2), I believe this behaviour now only happens when I just created a document and it is still uploading online.

In other words: if I open a Word document on my local drive but that it is still showing the upload icon (meaning it's uploading to the cloud), then Word will open a Sharepoint version instead. As long as the document remains open, Word will by default propose to save in Sharepoint rather than on the local drive. Is this a glitch or intentional feature?

Thanks,

Hi All,

We'd like to make a summary about the case, so every community member who comes across this thread will easily find the information:

=================

Issue description:

If we uncheck the option : Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open in OneDrive sync client and make some changes to a document stored in OneDrive, the changes will attempt to save to SharePoint first. The expected behavior is that changes will be saved to local PC first when we close the document.

Current status:

The issue is fixed in OneDrive version 18.025.0204.0007. You can install it from this article: New OneDrive sync client release notes

=================

Regards,

Sky

    I found version 18.025.0204.0003 of Onedrive on my machine this morning.  This version seems to work much better in two areas

    1. Saves to local synced folders of new documents work much faster and appear to save locally first.
    2. The duplicate file issue seems to be solved as well for me although that will require more testing.

    All good news.

    Hi Everyone,

    We have checked with Onedrive team and this appears to be a known issue for which fix is created and would be rolled out in future release after testing internally. Please always keep your OneDrive in the latest version.

    Regards,

    Sky

    Theoretically, you could create a login script that works like this:

    C:

    cd %HOMEPATH%

    del FileCoAuth.exe /s /q

    and have it execute anytime a user logs in.  That should solve the problem with the malware Microsoft has installed.  And, yes, I very much consider FileCoAuth.exe malware.  It's the VERY DEFINITION of malicious.  It was installed without permission OR documentation, runs without permission, violates user settings without permission, causes files to be uploaded to the Internet without permission, steals data from metered connections and bandwidth from others without permission, slows down users' PCs and applications, deliberately causes lost productivity time for users and businesses, and has no way to turn off or uninstall it from the GUI.

    So just got off the phone with the Microsoft support rep.  He referenced this article:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/collaborate-on-word-documents-with-real-time-co-authoring-7dd3040c-3f30-4fdd-bab0-8586492a1f1d

    And he actually had the nerve to say this was a deliberate change and that it's by design.  That's TOTAL garbage.  Oh, and he said this despite his additional statement that he was unable to reproduce this despite so many of us seeing this on 100% of systems.  I've now asked that my case be escalated to an actual Microsoft employee, the one who's been handling the case is a contractor.

    As for uservoice, folks, they don't care, I really believe that.  You're strictly limited to the number of votes you have and once you've use those your opinion no longer matters.  If they really wanted everyone's opinion we wouldn't be so limited.

    That's TOTALLY ridiculous.  Like I, as an IT manager, have so many opinions/ideas before I run out of any more good ones.  This is here to placate critics that Microsoft doesn't listen or care about users' views, but it's VERY clear they don't care or we wouldn't be so limited.
