I just tried OneNote for a Mac.
I noticed that there is no way to load or save a local OneNote file.
I've been using OneNote on a PC for years. Really like it a lot. Was hoping to
now use it on my Mac.
I don't know why OneNote is setup this way. I can't even load my existing personal
files from the Mac. The decision to use a cloud service should be mine and not forced into
it. Even Evernote lets me store locally.
I use it for both personal and work related projects. I cannot put work projects out on
a public cloud repository so this new version is a no go for work. At this point I think
I'll look at Mac equivalents to OneNote and convert to something else.....
Free is great, but I would pay for a fully functional Mac version of OneNote. Please reconsider
local file storage.

Thanks for the response. The files can't be shared for business reasons. Hence, my need to work on local files. What are the reasons why the Windows version can do this but the Mac version can't?
I was excited to read the article on redmondpie.com regarding the release of OneNote for Mac. I immediately downloaded the app and instantly found out that I cannot find a way to load or save local files, change the page pane to the left hand side as I'm used to as well as leary and waiting to find out what else I CAN'T do with OneNote for Mac.
Typical M$FT, take something useful, golden, and turn it into ****. I don't want a OneDrive account, and I can't take any corporate notes and store them on a third party service.
Why not require a HotMail account too? No longer so cool? Or maybe use of Microsoft Bob, or Windows Millennium Edition.
Or maybe you could add something really useful like asking if I want to send an email or a business fax every time I type in someone's email. That was REALLY useful in the past. Way to use let your business needs ruin your products.
Thanks for the feedback and in the free version of OneNote for Mac it only syncs to the cloud as you see. Why don't you have your files in the cloud? Without doing this you all cannot use your notes on other devices. And the team is looking to add Office 365 & SharePoint sync for work users who cannot sync to OneDrive; right now it was more consumer focused.
As for local files there isn't yet a way to upload them to OneDrive yet, do you have a bunch of old files that you don't have open in OneNote that you can't upload?

I don't want used OneDrive. And don't want sync my work with other devices use third company server.
I have so many files from Windows version on my local drive.
No local storage (and subsequent *direct* import from .one Windows files; IOW, not via the cloud) is a deal breaker for me.
There are some private files that need to be kept local and secure. It's not like this is a difficult feature to enable. Let users decide where to store files (SkyDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, *Local*, etc.) so that we don't have to have files strewn throughout servers.
Please, Microsoft, stop forcing the user's hand and instead *serve* the needs of the user.
BTW, there are things that users do NOT want to sync to other devices! :O
