excel 2013 crashes in windows 8.1

Hi,

I've made a fresh install of windows 8.1, and then office 2013. However excel 2013 crashes every time right after I try to scroll down.

  • Works in safe mode
  • There are no add-ins installed
  • Other office programs work fine
  • already completely uninstalled (via fixit) and reinstalled the software.
  • running windows 8.1 pro

"take a back-up of that OSF.DLL file and delete it.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office15\OSF.DLL

Or

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSF.DLL

Once the file is deleted open Excel and check if the issue persists."

    Wow, why does this work?! I feel weird deleting a DLL on a fresh install of Windows 8.1 & Office 2013.

    Brilliant it works for me too. I noticed OSF.DLL was a common factor in the event log for both Word and Excel and had tried to find a version on the Microsoft site. Didn't think of just deleting it !

    OSF.dll will replace itself with the next update. Please install the latest version of Avast! AV, and follow the directions at http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_microsoft_excel_support_team_blog/archive/2013/11/04/excel-2013-crashes-when-you-attempt-to-scroll-down-the-page.aspx to remove the incorrect registry key for a more permanent fix.
