excel 2013 crashes in windows 8.1

Hi,

I've made a fresh install of windows 8.1, and then office 2013. However excel 2013 crashes every time right after I try to scroll down.

  • Works in safe mode
  • There are no add-ins installed
  • Other office programs work fine
  • already completely uninstalled (via fixit) and reinstalled the software.
  • running windows 8.1 pro

"take a back-up of that OSF.DLL file and delete it.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office15\OSF.DLL

Or

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSF.DLL

Once the file is deleted open Excel and check if the issue persists."

    Avast! has posted an update to their Antivirus programs that resolves this issue. It is dated November 11, 2013. Once you install the new version, obtained from**http://www.avast.com**, you must do the following to resolve the crash:

    1. Reboot your machine (the last step of removing Avast!)
    2. Click on the File Tab, and click Options.
    3. Click Trust Center and then Trust Center Settings.
    4. Click Trusted App Catalogs, and then click the Clear button.

    After you do this and restart Excel, the crash should not occur.

    If you have renamed your OSF.dll file, please go name it back to OSF.dll

    After placing OSF.DLL in an new created folder the problem of Excel crashing when using the scroll wheel seemed to be fixed. Excel did not crahs anymore. I was too lazy to read all posts :-( and this post had 24 "found this helpfull" replies so why bother. I know better now!

    Then I had the same problem using the scrollbar on the right hand site Excel would crash as soon as I would touch it.

    So I installed a new version of Avast, and followed the steps in Excel as written above.

    For now everything seems to work fine, hope it stays that way because I find it very annoying and time consuming.

    Thanks anyway for the posts it helped me a lot.

    Working now since last Windows 8.1 update on Nov. 11, 2013. I have changed back OSF.DLL and restored the file. and Word & Excel still works.

    Yes!

    If you have Avast! Antivirus, go install the latest update... That's dated November 11th. This is important! It will take care of the Avast! conflict that causes the issue in the first place. Then:

    1. Reboot your machine (the last step of removing Avast!)
    2. Start Excel and click on the File Tab, and click Options.
    3. Click Trust Center and then Trust Center Settings.
    4. Click Trusted App Catalogs, and then click the Clear button.

    This will fix the bad registry entry that was caused by the conflict. Finally, we know that some people have seen this issue without Avast! installed, but we don't know how their registry got in this shape. For them, just following steps 2-4 should resolve the issue.
