office 365 Word won't let me type into a new document

I've had Office 365 for a while now and all was good.

However for the last four weeks, or so, I have not been able to type into a new Word document. If I try to the pc just pings at me and refuses to type. No other office programme is doing this. If I open an old document, or save a new document before typing, close it then open it I can type into it.

I have Win 8 and have only installed updates from windows and new video drivers since the problem began.

I have deleted the normal template and let it recreate one on opening, but the problem still exists.

Any suggestions?

I have solved the problem, but forgot to come on here and say how!

After playing about with the various options in Word I finally tried turning off the start screen that popped up when I started Word.

Not sure why, but now that it's turned off and a blank document opens straight away I can now type into a blank document again.

    Same exact issue here and unchecking the start screen did solve it. But I eventually tracked it down to the signed in account. Somehow, Office had switched to my domain accout (.local) and not my O365 account. Once I signed back in with the correct account everything worked again.

    I had same problem in 365.  Noticed it for months.  What I had discovered was that at first I couldn't type and just got the ping sound when I hit a key.  But if I waited long enough I would be able to start typing.  It was about 30 seconds or more before I could type.  Eventually I was annoyed enough that I googled the problem and found this conversation.  The solution described works.  Un-check the start screen box.

    Now I can type immediately.  

    I imagine this is about allocated memory issues with the computer.  Definitely something Microsoft should address.  For every person that has found find this obscure solution, I'm sure there are a hundred users who deal with this frustrating feature every time they start a new document.

    Strangely, I have the problem but the 'start screen' option WASN'T ticked. Ticking it, unticking it, saving normal and quitting in between changes -- no effect whatsoever, and it's just bizarre. No pinging sound, though.

    I had this same problem and turning off the start screen worked for me as well. Go to options in the file tab. At the bottom of the screen under start up options uncheck the box "show the Start screen when this application starts".
