PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times.

1. I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2. After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3. I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again. I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper. Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
"Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

I'm starting to wonder if this has something to do with how much is in cache.

It seems the more often I save the less likely I am to crash. If I let it get away and add 2-3 slides before saving, it almost always crashes.

Also, I have noticed when it does crash RAM usage is high. I have 8gig of RAM and on pretty much all occasions the standby memory is full, but I still have a lot of RAM available.

With all my working Apps open I pretty much constantly consume 5-6 gig of RAM "In Use."

Okay, this happened again this morning and I think I can spell out the sequence, although I suspect it's meaningless. Because of an NDA I can't give this file to MS.

**** update on the file: I did talk to the client. He said no more than is in this deck at this point and the fact that there are no client identifying images here, he said I could send it to MS. So... I need someone from MS to touch base with me and tell me where to send this failed file. I don't have the copy of right before the failure. It's already been saved over.

I have a deck, 5 slides with images on all 5. File size is 5 meg. There are no images in the template

I started PPT and opened the file to make a couple of edits to the template.

I set the title placeholder to BOLD and I set the content box to "Do Not Autofit Text".

I added a new slide "CTRL-M" and added text to the title and content placeholders.

When I tried to save, I got the "Read Only" failure. I then did the "Save As" to get my current work saved.

I exited the original without saving and immediately reopened that file.

I also opened the "Save As" file and as expected, all images on slides 1-5 were gone.

So I went back through the same sequence of edits from above and then Cut and Paste the new slide 6 from the "Save As" file.

I got the same "Read-Only" error when I tried to save again.

I exited the original without saving since I already had a bad "Save-As" file.

I reopened my original deck. This time I cut and pasted the Slide 6 first, then I did the edits to the template.

The file saved just like it was supposed to.

It took me much longer to hammer out this email than it did to sequence through this morning Microsoft madness.

I've actually gotten my recovery time in the couple of minutes range.

I keep my save fairly current. I don't do the "Save As" each time. I've found if I can get it to save with the save function, I have the most current version saved. Then, if it doesn't save, I do the Save As and then open up the last save and the new "save as" file and get the slide up to date with the most current items on the Save As. If I have an images missing on that slide, I just do a "Change Image" on the Red-X box replacing the image that was there.

At that point I am back current.

At this point it's purely a nuisance, but at least the issue is not costing me tons of time any more.

It also seems to happen more often when I have had PPT open for awhile and have done many changes so I usually close and restart PowerPoint after an event.

Good luck with it. I do wish Microsoft would work this out. I'm about " " this close to moving to Keynote on the Mac for future work.
