Need hyperlinks index entries in word 2007

\h = heading?

Why should that switch work differently in an index than in the TOC? (I can see it not working in the index if the index can't hyperlink, but why differently in each place?)

{ TOC \o "3-3" \u \t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2" }

creates a TOC with page numbers hyperlinked but not the words

{ TOC \o "3-3" \u \t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2" \h }

creates a TOC with both words and page numbers hyperlinked.  Because some of the headings in the main body of the document were bookmarks to other sections, I experimented and removed or changed some of the bookmark designations with no effect on the hyperlinks in the TOC.

So.....?

By the way, may I join the others in this forum in expressing the sentiment that the fact that Word can't provide an automatically hyperlinked index is unprofessional, shortsighted, lame, and retarded.  It's also making me look bad because I (naturally) assumed it worked that way and assure my boss that it could be done.

I thought the solution given was not too bad if the document wasn't very big. So I created all the bookmarks, then created all the hyperlinks. It all worked good until the first time I updated the index. All the links went away. What a joke.

Actually, \h has nothing to do with hyperlinks in the Index: \h "Heading"

Inserts text formatted with the Index Heading style (style: A combination of formatting characteristics, such as font, font size, and indentation, that you name and store as a set. When you apply a style, all of the formatting instructions in that style are applied at one time.) between alphabetic groups in the index. Enclose the text in quotation marks. The field { INDEX \h "—A—" } displays the appropriate letter before each alphabetic group in the index. To insert a blank line between groups, use empty quotation marks: \h "".

To create a hyperlink to a location within the same document, use one of the following methods:

·         Use a drag-and-drop operation. To do this, follow these steps:

1.      Save the document.

2.      Select the word, phrase, or image that you want to use as the destination for the hyperlink.

3.      Right-click and hold down the mouse button while dragging the selection to the new location; then, release the mouse button.

4.      Click Create Hyperlink Here.

·         Create a bookmark, and then create a link. To do this, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running:

o    In Word 2007, follow these steps:

1.      Save the document.

2.      Select the text or the image that you want to use as the destination for the hyperlink.

3.      Click the Insert tab.

4.      In the Links group, click Bookmark.

5.      In the Bookmark name box, type a unique name for the bookmark, and then click Add.

6.      Move the insertion point to the location in the document where you want to create the hyperlink.

7.      Click Hyperlink in the Links group.

8.      Click Bookmark.

9.      In the Select Place in Document dialog box, select the bookmark that you want to use as the destination hyperlink, and then click OK.

10.  Click OK to close the Insert Hyperlink dialog box.

For a TOC, we are told to "press Alt+F9 to display the field codes. In the TOC field, the \h switch  tells Word to make hyperlinks." The \h is in the Index field codes but does nothing. I have had to add text to the intro of the Index:

"Unfortunately, Microsoft Word does not convert the Index page numbers into hyperlinks. To jump to a page in the PDF, specify the page number in your PDF Reader’s navigation toolbar."

There is a big difference between offering a possible explanation and making excuses.
