Transfer license to a new computer

Hello all,

I just purchased a new computer and want to transfer my Microsoft Office license to the new computer. How do I do that? Can someone send me step-by-step instructions?

The activation process keeps track of number of times you have used a product key. If this is your 4th installation you may get message saying you can't use this product key. Make sure you uninstall from one of the other machines. If it won't allow you to activate, you will have to do a phone activation and tell the service rep that you have uninstalled from one of the previous machines.

the recording chews on my activation code for a while, and then says "sorry we can't activate" (paraphrased) and hangs up

The easiest way is try to activate the new installation by phone, it will not take more than 5 minutes.

If it really was a retail license you would have been allowed to install on the new computer. 2010 Retail licenses allow install on 2 machines at the same time, AND transfer to new devices.

What is the FULL and EXACT error message text you get.

When you phone in, don't answer the initial prompts. Wait until you are given theoption of talking to a live service rep. They can explain the error.

PS: You really should post this as a completely new question so that more people look at it. Right now, only the people who looked at this question initially are probably looking at your question.

Hello Deepa,

I was provided what I believe was a retail version of Project 2010 at work, and installed on my desktop & laptop. It activated over the internet.

My desktop (XP) recently crashed with a windows installer issue, and could not uninstall or install anything with a .msi installer. We finally gave up and I got a new windows 7 machine. the old PC has been wiped and is awaiting a new OS, it will probably be upgraded to windows 7 or discarded.

I re-installed MS Project 2010 on my new machine but it will not activate, over the internet or over the phone. If this is because it was not uninstalled from my old machine, that is because of the fatal windows installer problem.
