I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need
The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag
Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760
I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

I, like many of the other people on this report, have received an error in a document with a lot with the microsoft equation editor (I believe version 5 is the one in Word 2010). I myself went into the XML and the line and column that the error mentioned (Line 2 and Column 49830) and nothing seemed wrong.

It seems as though this has been happening more frequently in the past few days... could you possibly file a bug report with Microsoft for it? I wish to continue using Word 2010 in the future for Math homework.

The error is different in this case. The archive is corrupted (a docx is nothing more than a zip with a different extension). What Word tries to do is repair the zip so it can open it. It seems to be successful with the exception of 2 files: word/document.xml and word/glossary/settings.xml. Unfortunately word/document.xml is the most important file of the archive as it contained the text you typed.
Did you try to save the document directly to a flash drive rather than to your hard drive and then copy the result? I'm asking because that is the most common way to get your document corrupted and should be avoided if possible.
I did an attempt at cleaning up document.xml but I had to remove a lot of things. Basically anything between the lines "fat can be found in milk, dairy products and breakfasts cereals which I eat regularly." and "If I was to drink this, 9.3% of my total energy intake would be wasted on a gross drink!" is lost. By carefully going over the xml you might be able to recuparate more of the document, but that's something you will have to do yourself.
The zip file you can find at the bottom contains both the 'partially' repaired document, and the document.xml which you might want to go through yourself. Good luck.

Interesting. Apparently, Word 2007 is not able to locate the error while Word 2010 is. The machine I normally use for development only has Word 2007 so that's why I couldn't find anything.

You might want to check the last 3 pages for anything which might have moved a little.
