Can't open Word File because of end tag/start tag mismatch error...need XML help!

I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need

  The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag

Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760

I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

Going forward if you or anyone else comes across this issue again, we have a FixIt solution created that should address this problem.  You can go to the following KB article and it should give you the details about how you can correct these documents.

    This does happen with some documents, unfortunately. I am working on an amendment to the rebuilder which, I hope, will do a better job of repair, but it isn't entirely straightforward.

    It isn't ideal, but you should be able to continue opening the document with the rebuilder. If you send me a copy of the document (Tony at Jollans dot com), I believe I can manually do it with more chance of permanence.

    Hi,

    I had the same problem and with rebuilder.dotm i am able to open the document again and i am very very grateful for that. But now i have a new problem. When i save the repaired document i only can open it with rebuilder.dotm and i cannot find the problem in the document.

    Can anyone help me?

    It was rebuilt using the utility that you can download from fellow MVP Tony Jollans website at:

    I suggest that you:

    (a)    Immediately make a backup copy of the rebuilt document

    (b)    Down load a copy of Tony's Rebuilder from the above website and save it in the Word Startup folder.  It will then appear under a new Broken Documents tab on the ribbon and you will be able to use it to recover any further problems with your document without having to wait for someone else to see a post to the forum.
