I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need
The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag
Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760
I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

Going forward if you or anyone else comes across this issue again, we have a FixIt solution created that should address this problem. You can go to the following KB article and it should give you the details about how you can correct these documents.

Good news. I wrote the rebuilder for fun, and to learn. It only works for a particular (too common) error, which probably accounts for a bit over half the files in this thread. The biggest bonus for me, however, is not having to deal with those ghastly free file sharing sites (I'll grant they meet a need, but their delays and the various links one can accidentally click when trying to download a file just irritate me) :-)

I have a similar crisis as the rest, my assignment with irreplaceable information in it has unbalanced xml tags and I have no experience with this. I took a look at document.xml but couldn't understand what was missing.

You still have all your comment though they aren't showing up because their origin has been removed from the text. If you want to read them, make a copy of your docx, change the extension to zip, and look inside the archive for word/comments.xml. Might not be that easily readable, but it is there.
