Can't open Word File because of end tag/start tag mismatch error...need XML help!

I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need

  The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag

Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760

I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

Going forward if you or anyone else comes across this issue again, we have a FixIt solution created that should address this problem.  You can go to the following KB article and it should give you the details about how you can correct these documents.

    I have the same problem with my Windows Vista document. I keep getting the message: The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag.

    The same error doesn't always mean the same thing. The documents repaired in this thread contain equations which are malformatted for some reason. This is however not your problem. Part of your document is damaged beyond repair, not badly formatted.

    Have you tried saving this document directly to a USB stick or some other type of external media? If so, that is most likely the cause of the issue. You should always save to your local hard drive and then copy to your stick.

    The requirement to tell your web server something it doesn't understand, in order for it to perform the simple task of doing nothing to your file is slightly bizarre. As it doesn't understand, of course, you are free to tell it almost any kind of nonsense you like, which, in a way, is even more bizarre.

    With Tony Jollans utility that can be downloaded from http://www.wordarticles.com/temp/Rebuilder.dotm I was able to open your file.

    You need to save the Rebuilder.dotm file in the Word Startup folder C:\users[user name]\App Data\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup and then when you re-start word, there will be a Broken Documents tab on the Ribbon. Click on that tab and then on the Rebuild button and then navigate to and select your document and it should be repaired and saved with the name Specific Charge of an Electron (Rebuilt).docx
