I get the following message when i try to open a word document that i desperately need
The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag
Location: Part: word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column: 96760
I know how to "unzip" the docx files and get to the main document.xml file, but i know nothing about xml programming. Any suggestions? i got an xml editor and found that there are 6 mismatch errors, but i don't know how to fix them. I also don't know how to rezip al the files back into a docx format. I would love any help. Thanks.

Good news. I wrote the rebuilder for fun, and to learn. It only works for a particular (too common) error, which probably accounts for a bit over half the files in this thread. The biggest bonus for me, however, is not having to deal with those ghastly free file sharing sites (I'll grant they meet a need, but their delays and the various links one can accidentally click when trying to download a file just irritate me) :-)

Someone should ask Microsoft to host a server for people to put their corrupt Micrsoft Word documents on.
I wonder how they would turn that one into a positive PR statement.
It does have the tendency to corrupt as soon as you edit the rebuilt file, but this just requires repairing it each time to get access to the document. Way better off than with no document at all!
