when I try to open the original document it says "file cannot be opened because of its contents"
"The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag.
Location: Part /word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column:21757"
I added a link to the original .docx in case that might help. I don't know it might have been on my end during the zipping or something. Anyways, thanks for all the help already.

Your archive was corrupted. And unfortunately, the document.xml is damaged. So part of your content is lost for good. I tried to recover as much as possible. I uploaded a zip containing the result athttp://www.4shared.com/file/ReNZM_b0/recovered_-_Literacy_History_f.html
There are 2 files in there. The docx contains what I could recover from your document which is about 5 pages. The second (document.xml) contains the corrupted document. There is still more of the original data in there, but it is just so badly mangled that
you can only process it by hand. Still, I guess it is better than nothing.
Note that your archive was corrupted. A likely cause is that you tried to save the document directly to a flash drive rather than going by your hard disc. If that was the case, don't do it again. If that wasn't the case, then it could be anything, from a
one time error to a disc corruption.
