Hiii... I saved a document on my computer and when I tried to re-open it, just couldn't... I found this error message: The name in the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag. Location: Part:/word/document.xml, Line: 2, Column:646910. I already tried to open the file with notepad but i dont understand anything that appears there... i only get nonsense letters and symbols... :s Can anyone help me pleasee??? I believe the 13th <mc:AlternateContent> tag had no close. I manually added the closing tag and was able to open the document without further repair.

I heartily recommend that you seriously proofread this repaired copy for lost content before submitting to your client or boss.

If I remember correctly, the problem with your DOCX was an oMath mismatch. You should try the fix available here,

You receive an "end tag" error when you open Word 2007 or 2010 files

... How do you fix it?

If you make sure that your Office software suite has all applicable service packs and other updates applied, the instances of this problem are greatly reduced.

    Read/write operations to/from an external drives are buffered and removing the drive without using the Safely remove hardware command will leave the buffers unflushed and render the DOCX file useless. This happens to DOCX files all the time when a user decides there isn't enough time to copy/work to/from the local HDD. It does not matter whether you close the document and the program (e.g. Word). The read/write buffers need to be flushed and terminated properly in order to preserve the integrity of the DOCX file. The internal word/document.xml configuration was corrupted within the DOCX archive structure and recovery procedures yielded nothing but programming NULLs beyond the eighth page of content. Since this happened in the middle of an XML configuration pair of tags, the latter tag could not be read to close the XML configuration command.

    Hi Jeeped, 

    Thanks for your reply. I last edited the whole document (so until the end of the document).

    You are right that I have been working from my USB stick since it's easier to work with the documents at home at night.

    Can I ask why I received document.XML error? I didn't use any Mathtag if that was the cause of the problem.

    Although you only saved the first 8 pages, thanks very much for your effort!
