I have been categorizing my mails and adding the categories to the favorites. When clicking on the category in the favorites it showed me all mails in the category which was fine up to a couple of hours ago. Now it shows nothing. When I click the 3 dots it opens a pop up telling me "X items (0 unread)" but it doesn't show any items. The same goes in outlook.com in the web

I cannot take credit for this solution, I found it elsewhere, but it works!
Build the Master Category List
To build the new Category list in Outlook, right click on the top of the mailbox and choose "Data File Properties". Here you’ll see a button called “Upgrade to Color Categories…”.
When you press this button, Outlook will look through the entire mailbox for Categories and when found, it will add them to the Master Category List.
Wrong version of Outlook. The issue most of us are having is with the NEW Outlook client. The one that looks exactly like outlook.office365.com. There is no Master Category List, Data File Properties, or Upgrade to Color Categories in the NEW Outlook.
