I received an email stating Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access. Is this legit or a scam?

Thanks for helping everyone out. I still don't get and I'm relatively tech-savvy. I hope you will be able to assist me too.

On my laptop, I also received the email with

"Action Needed – You may lose access to some of your third-party mail and calendar apps."

" Update your sign-in technology before September 16^th^, 2024 to maintain email access."

It showed up in my Hotmail account which is from years ago which now opens in the window as oulook.live.com in my chrome browser.

I clicked on the link to Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps I can't understand what to do.

I have Outlook (V2408 Build 17928.20114) installed on my laptop. I have set it up to receive emails from 3 ISP's including bigpond and iinet. All are POP/SMTP.

I have a gmail account as well. On my laptop it is open in my chrome browser and on my iPhone I use the gmail app.

My default Mail App is iPhone Mail app. I set it up to bring emails from my Hotmail, iinet and bigpond accounts.

I do not use my phone for correspondence, but only to read messages. The accounts are not synced.

Back to hotmail/outlook.live in my chrome browser - I just noticed under the menu bar a message saying "Avoid losing access to Outlook by adding a recovery phone number"

Is that a simple solution to the issue?

Now to issue 2 which could complicate that simple solution.

Every month Microsoft sends me an email with my Microsoft 365 Apps for business invoice. It is sent to my bigpond a/c.

When I click on the link to View your invoice it takes me to a pop-up window "Action Required. Security defaults are enabled to keep your organization secure. Follow the prompts to set up a multifactor authentication method to protect your account."

The window has my onmicrosoft.com email address. It gives me the option to use a different account. If I select that option should I use my hotmail a/c?

I didn't change the account. I pressed next and was taken to the screen asking me to get download the Microsoft Authenticator App.

There is an option to set up a different method ie phone. Should I do that?

I did download it to my phone but don't understand why I need it on my phone. It is asking me to sign in. Do I use my hotmail email or onmicrosoft?

So to summarize, how will it help me download the app on my phone. Will it automatically "fix" authentication on my laptop? And at the same time take care of my hotmail issue?

Or should I just use my phone number for both issues?
