New Outlook Not Syncing Read Status for Gmail

Hi, I'm running the new version of Outlook on Windows 11, and have connected to both my Uni (O365) and Gmail (Microsoft Cloud). O365 works fine, but the Gmail account doesn't sync read status back to gmail. I.e. outlook gets the correct read status from Gmail, and it syncs things like starring/flagging emails back to Gmail. But although I can mark things as read in Outlook, that status never syncs back to Gmail. The same is true on 3 different PCs, so it's not peculiar to one particular computer.

Any ideas?

I also have the same problem with Gmail and "Read-Status-Sync". Receiving and deleting emails works fine. But the "read status" is not synchronized.

Same here, same problem, same frustration with the bot-like answers on this official Microsoft answers site. I have submitted feedback several times through the new Outlook to the Support (whatever that may be at Microsoft's end). I am not holding my breath.

The longer this bug persists, the more I'm getting used to, and liking, Thunderbird (on Windows).

Thanks for letting me know - I couldn't find any threads started by others on the topic, so I assumed it was something unique to my set up. Good to know it's not!

    Hello Rich9999(2),

I’m Segunfunmi, an Independent Advisor and Microsoft user like you. Thanks for posting the query here in this forum.

I understand your issue. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue of Outlook not syncing read status with Gmail:

Reset your Outlook account: Add your Gmail account to your Outlook and click on Connect to easily sync.

Enable IMAP in Gmail: You need to enable IMAP in Gmail before connecting your account. You can do this by going to Gmail.com, selecting Settings, then the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. Under IMAP Access, select Enable IMAP and save changes.

Verify Windows updates: Ensure the latest Windows updates are running on your computer.

Check two-step verification: Check if two-step verification is supported. One common issue that causes Gmail to fail to sync with Outlook or other clients is the lack of support for two-step verification.

Change SMTP & other settings in your email client: You need to check if you have the correct information for the incoming mail (IMAP) server and outgoing mail (SMTP) server.

Enable folders: Outlook and Mail for Windows 10 need access to your folders in Gmail. Make sure that the folders are set to show in IMAP.

After you’ve enabled IMAP in Gmail and set your Gmail folders to show in IMAP, refresh Outlook or Mail for Windows 10. Note that it can take up to 15 minutes for syncing to refresh.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Kind regards, Segunfunmi.
