Hi,
I have a free hotmail account (15 GB storage limit) and am within this storage limit. I also have a Ondrive account (comes automatically with your hotmail account). The storage capacity is 5GB and is unused.
A few weeks ago this empty Onedrive account became full, because my Outlook attachments popped up there and instantly took my storage capacity to over the 5GB limit (twice as much).
Since then I haven't been able to receive or send emails at all, even though my hotmail storage is well within the storage limit.
Technical support at Microsoft claim that there is a bug that their engineers have been trying to fix. Not sure though this is accurate, as I've read nothing about it in the news. On Microsoft's website they say they changed storage rules in Feb 2023, so that Onedrive automatically captures your hotmail storage capacity as well. Effectively, this is a reduction of your hotmail storage capacity from 15GB to 5GB. Pay up or delete your emails is what this is about.
Anyone else facing this problem? Any ideas what is really causing this? A technical bug or an attempt by Microsoft to force hotmail account holders to pay a monthly subscription?
Any help or feedback much appreciated.

These days every company etc thinks we are Mrs Gates-loads of money and just Pay, Pay, Buy, Buy. Doesn't Bill Gates have enough money, still needs more??????
I'm definitely going to Gmail. This is ridiculous. I been with them for years and now this. I can't afford to pay yearly let alone monthly. 😔
You can't stop saving files to OneDrive. Microsoft have made it impossible to decouple from OneDrive and your email attachments are automatically stored in OneDrive.
Your two options are to keep your Hotmail emails below 5GB or subscribe and get more storage in OneDrive and Hotmail.
I recommend you, and everyone else, writes to Microsoft's Investor relations team on msft@microsoft.com to demand Microsoft rectifies this.
I also recommend you write to BBC's technology team on ******@bbc.co.uk. The more who write to both, the more likely this will be written about in the press and force Microsoft into responding or reversing this.
You can also write to your local politician, assuming these will be interested in taking this up with Microsoft.
Hi, since reading andreplying to this query, I have found that it is the Onedrive capacity which is the issue. I am well within the storage capacity for emails, but way over the limit on Onedrive storage.
The largest files are pictures and videos, and some pictures have, for some reason, been saved as videos. There are also duplicate photos in there, so by going through them systematically I have managed to bring my Onedrive storage down to the magic 5GB. Still more work to do to be able to receiveand send emails again, but at least I am making progress.
Going forward, I'm not yet sure how to maintain my storage below 5GB, although I am wondering if we can stop saving files to Onedrive. Do we need that? I have an external hard drive so I can store on there if need be.
What do you think is the best way going forward?
The little **** who owns Microsoft just wants more and more money, don;t know why??? so just pay and pay and pay and get very little ...........
