Hi,
I have a free hotmail account (15 GB storage limit) and am within this storage limit. I also have a Ondrive account (comes automatically with your hotmail account). The storage capacity is 5GB and is unused.
A few weeks ago this empty Onedrive account became full, because my Outlook attachments popped up there and instantly took my storage capacity to over the 5GB limit (twice as much).
Since then I haven't been able to receive or send emails at all, even though my hotmail storage is well within the storage limit.
Technical support at Microsoft claim that there is a bug that their engineers have been trying to fix. Not sure though this is accurate, as I've read nothing about it in the news. On Microsoft's website they say they changed storage rules in Feb 2023, so that Onedrive automatically captures your hotmail storage capacity as well. Effectively, this is a reduction of your hotmail storage capacity from 15GB to 5GB. Pay up or delete your emails is what this is about.
Anyone else facing this problem? Any ideas what is really causing this? A technical bug or an attempt by Microsoft to force hotmail account holders to pay a monthly subscription?

I have the same issue. I even paid the $19.99 annual fee for additional storage. Still have the same problem. On top of that I cannot get to a person when I call tech support. I receive a message directing me to the website.
You can't unlink OneDrive and Hotmail. It's Microsoft's way of forcing users to subscribe.
"Free" hotmail account have effectively been scaled back to 5GB.
Your options are deleting as many emails until you have less than 5GB or subscribe.
I have deleted all my emails and attachments and One drive storage still says I'm over the 5GB limit... even though all folders are empy and there are no attachments to delete. It seems deeply unfair and im unable to use my hotmail account which ive hgad for over twenty years.
I encountered the same problem last night and spent several hours deleting emails to get just to 4.9gb in my Hotmail. I am glad I'm not the only one frustrated and confused.
How come i get 15gb in hotmail, yet only 5gb in one drive, which includes Hotmail? That doesn't make sense, where is the other 10gb?
I have read comments on here that one drive now syncs to your attachments and stores them there, can I undo that feature somehow so the attachments stay in Hotmail where i have 15gb and not transfered to one drive where i only have 5gb? (Which is a pathetic amount of data in my opinion)

I’ve chosen a third approach. Painstakingly deleted 8GB of 1+ MB files and reverting to professional accounts for anything I don’t need to store later for tax or privacy reasons. Loss is Microsoft with no further use or payment for their useless services. Who pays for a hotmail account or generic domain email address anyway! Seriously, anyone…?
