Recently my outlook business account has started tagging emails as "External" with a massive grey box that takes up a third of the available space it the preview pane. It was bad enough in the subject lines but this is making my inbox unusable.
Whoever designed it obviously doesn't use email.
Is there a way to disable the External Tagging?

This additionally creates another issue, when email is a chain other peoples replies in the chain will add external reply to external reply not allowing the conversation to be linked in one chain just shows as separate email.
The "From" Column at the top of your emails. Mine already says the "no tag" after. I'm not sure what your outlook setup is but that's mine below.
I used the work around and left the original field very small for this very purpose. Funny enough the external tag disappeared on the original from field after I added the custom field but then when I removed the custom field it came right back so I put the custom field back in and left the original as a very small field I can click on if I need to sort.

That said Roady is incorrect that it is off by default - it is most certainly on in our tenant and I did not enable it (I'm the only one that could).
Mine is off. I don't even know there's such option until I read another post like this one. Checked it. It's disabled. I'm the only admin too.
Could you include a screenshot of what you are seeing?
External tagging can be implemented in multiple ways by your corporate email administrators or security team. A screenshot would really help to determine which method they have chosen to use.
The built-in method from Microsoft, is to include a single line in the Infobar. As you mentioned that it takes up a third of the available space in your Preview Pane, it sounds like they have implemented a method which actually modifies the message. In that case, you'll need to provide this feedback to your email administrators or security team, as that method is custom and not controlled by Microsoft from a user experience perspective (as your admins control the displayed message and the size of it).
