Outlook saying I need more storage.

Hi there,

I've used a live.com account for years, and have always logged in through my browser to view emails. Today, the page loaded with a thin red notification at the top stating "From February 1, you'll need more storage to send or receive email."

Obviously, for a start, it's 16 days past February 1 which is weird, and my email is all working fine at the moment.

Clicking on "Manage Storage" opens a window, which states that my total used for my Microsoft Storage (things backed up from a laptop I hardly use, didn't even realise that they were being backed up to be honest) is 7.8GB out of a 5GB limit. I tried unsyncing my desktop on said laptop, but all it's done is remove everything from that laptop, which is pretty frustrating as I just wanted to leave the data on there and just free up some space on the Microsoft storage.

Anyway, I'm not overly bothered by that by now, as I'm more worried about my emails not working. Separate to the Microsoft storage, it lists my "Email Storage", which is 7.6GB out of 15GB. Does anyone know why I'm getting notified that I'm in danger of losing my email and pushed to buy a ridiculously expensive price plan?

    Ive decided to dump Hotmail/Outlook after this fiasco - the email page is now too small and you cant see the whole email - after googling how its done it seems quite straightforward to go from HM to GMAIL - but ill have to brace myself before I make the change.

    So goodbye Hotmail.com ive been with you from the very start, but the way you went about scaring everyone was an own goal.

    I probably would have signed up for £1.99 but you have been dishonest. So im sure that amount will go up in future.

    I have deleted everything from one drive and it is now working. I have hundreds of junk mails coming in now XXX rated and can't stop them argh!

    Seems like Microsoft waited to have huge number of Hotmail users, knowing that everyone's email will be using large storage, and then switched on this plan to force everyone to buy storage of your email will stop working. At the same time they are making it complicated and almost impossible to understand how to free up space. I bet that 99% of Hotmail users are having the same storage issues now, and most are just tempted to pay the monthly storage fee, after trying unsuccessfully to clear storage while deleting and losing important emails.

    I guess time to move to gmail after all these years...

    I can’t even get into one drive. I get a “this site cannot be reached. It’s either down or has moved to a different site”!

    Seems like my reply to you didn't go through. I had exactly your experience with Windows 11. Your tip is very useful, since Microsoft relies on users' lack of tech knowledge to force through its changes. Let's hope they are held to account.
