Outlook saying I need more storage.

Hi there,

I've used a live.com account for years, and have always logged in through my browser to view emails. Today, the page loaded with a thin red notification at the top stating "From February 1, you'll need more storage to send or receive email."

Obviously, for a start, it's 16 days past February 1 which is weird, and my email is all working fine at the moment.

Clicking on "Manage Storage" opens a window, which states that my total used for my Microsoft Storage (things backed up from a laptop I hardly use, didn't even realise that they were being backed up to be honest) is 7.8GB out of a 5GB limit. I tried unsyncing my desktop on said laptop, but all it's done is remove everything from that laptop, which is pretty frustrating as I just wanted to leave the data on there and just free up some space on the Microsoft storage.

Anyway, I'm not overly bothered by that by now, as I'm more worried about my emails not working. Separate to the Microsoft storage, it lists my "Email Storage", which is 7.6GB out of 15GB. Does anyone know why I'm getting notified that I'm in danger of losing my email and pushed to buy a ridiculously expensive price plan?

    After reading many comments I have decided to switch to another email client. I am using Thunderbird. It is OK, but importing contacts is clunky - or perhaps I just don't yet know my way around it yet. Tying the respectable Outlook to expensive Microsoft storage that I don't need or want was just too much to deal with. There are plenty of storage alternatives as well as email client alternatives out there.

    They want you to buy more storage en bull**** , mine is not full and they want me to buy more memory

    I ended up caving and buying a subscription. I couldn't handle the hassle anymore. Yup, they got me. It's too bad. I've been an Outlook (desktop client) for decades. It's the only reason I stuck with Microsoft for my email needs. Will pay until I find another solution. It might be time to move on.

    I dont think they will fix the issue. They have no interest to fix it, because they want to force you buy storage. Actually they may have created this issue lately to force users to buy storage

    They are saying we have 15GB of storage for email, but then they deduct the storage on the OneDrive (which they get users to use without being aware), so it comes out of the storage for the email which then shrinks to the 5GB

    They know people have been hotmail for years keeping important emails, and waited for the right moment to come out with this policy and force people to buy storage, knowing that people have years of emails that may be important for them, making it very complex to delete and clean the email, expecting to people to be desperate and just pay for storage.

    Furthermore, everyone is noticing hundreds of junk emails coming through to the hotmail, which now they let them through and make our email storage problem even bigger
