Outlook External Email Tag

Great tip, which our IT department passed on to me, thanks for this. I have also discovered something which may help people: I added the new field as suggested here and realised I couldn't sort on it (something I do regularly with my overfull email inbox....). So I brought back the original From field and by chance put it to the right of the new field I'd just created --> which made me realise that having a field to the left of the From field suppresses the external label....!

So I'm now keeping my newly-made column to the left of the From column (but having it about 3 mm wide in the display) and using the original From field (and its ability to sort) but without the very, very irritating external label.

Workaround:

Right click on the From header at top of emails. Then Field Chooser

 

Then New, change the Type to Formula, give the new field a name (e.g. MyFrom). Enter [From] in the Formula box.

 

Click OK.  Now click and drag the newly created Field from the list onto the emails beside the existing From field

 

Now, click and drag the original From field off the email list.  The EXTERNAL Label is tied to that field, and by removing the 'real' From field it will take away the label.

To get to the step listed above, I had to go to the "view tab", and under "arrangement" select "Add Columns" then select "New Column..." then I followed the instructions above and replaced "From" with "Myfrom" in my list of shown columns.

No I have not. And it seems as though the update has hit most of our users and they are not happy with the change. I'm getting 15 tickets a day about it.

Moving a text field in front of the From field is great (and thank you for the tip!) for Outlook desktop, but I can't do that on a smart phone, where the new tag eats up a larger portion of the limited screen real estate.

No one at my company is happy with this new feature and I think it is a mistake to force it on all customers without a feasible way to turn it off. Our company is small and we have far more clients and vendors who we communicate with than employees. And we use Teams for 99% of internal communications (that's what it was designed for, right?), so an external sender is the expectation. External communications is literally all we use email for, so nearly all emails get the tag, and it ends up being about as informative as a tag that says "EMAIL."

I'm not saying it's not helpful for some. But it's definitely not for us. A tag that appears on every email is noise, not signal. Users will tune it out and it will not make anyone more secure.

How can I turn this new feature on and off?
