Hello -

When I attempt to add my outlook.com email account to any iOS device I recieve the error "Unable to verify account information".

I see this problem on my iPhone 4s and iPad and all devices are running iOS5.01 with no additional updates available.

I followed these steps to setup my account

-settings, add new mail account

-selected Hotmail

-entered my outlook.com address (full SMTP address - eg ******@outlook.com) and my password

-after several seconds I recieve the error "Unable to verify account information"

Power cycling the devices doesn't help.  Everything works fine from the web.

Any ideas?

sign in to what account on the web browser?

Just upgraded to iOS8.0.1 and had exactly the problem described. I went into Outlook through a browser, disabled my phone and turned off 2 step security and boom... It worked just like you said. MICROSOFT - you need to fix the bug!!!

There is no need to compromise the security of your MS account simply because you own an iProduct.  You may keep 2-step verification activefor your Windows Phone and other compatible devices by simply using the "App passwords" generator in your MS account settings (shown below).  The password generated is working seamlessly for my iPad Air running iOS 8.0.2.

I've never had a password issue with my Outlook account(s) on iPad's default Mail utility until after I began using the Microsoft Authenticator app (WP8) for 2-step verification (5 OCT 14).  Prior to using the authenticator app, I was using the SMS option for 2-step verification (for nearly a year) and was always able to access any Outlook account with the iPad mail utility by using only the account password.  Cheers!

(This layout is more for people who are more visual learners and don't want to read through paragraphs or Microsofts long explanations".

SOLUTION FOR  "Unable to verify account information on iPhone for outlook.com"

Log into your email account using an internet browser.

    Once logged in:

Click on your name in the upper right hand corner

    Click on Account Settings

    Click on Security & Password

    Remove your "2 Step verification"

Try setting up your outlook account now on your phone this should work

*note: I also had 2 phones registered under the security settings and I deleted one. I don't know if that had anything to do with it not working but I did it for good measure anyways.

Hope this helps anyone, like it had for me!

This is the answer. The 2 Step Security function interferes with the outlook account on the iphone if you change your password or try to add your Outlook account. I agree that Microsoft needs to make this clear to users. Once I disabled 2 step, I could add my Outlook account to my iPhone 5C again.
