Dear Community,
I have a persistent issue being discussed across various platforms, including Reddit and microsoft own community.
Despite numerous updates, the problem continues to exist, specifically on M1 MacBooks.
The core of the issue is that the MacBook tends to run out of memory and appears to resort to using storage as memory. This behavior results in notable performance issues with certain applications, especially Microsoft Office programs.
For excample, I recently encountered a situation where, while running PowerPoint version 16.78 on macOS version 13.0.1, my presentation encountered severe performance problems. On closer inspection, I found that Powerpoint was utilizing 58GB of RAM, which led to the program freezing.
It's imperative for us as a community to address this matter and find potential solutions.
Is there any working solution for this?

Nothing worked. Even a full factory reset and different outlook versions.
I did end up to sell M1 and buy m2 which don’t have the issue now.
There is for sure a bug but only % of people are affected.

Yesterday a forum user provided crash logs and together we were able to trace that very behavior in Microsoft Word to the Zotero addin and another application that were soaking up memory like crazy.
Using Activity Monitor can help figure out what apps are grabbing too much RAM.

Sad to hear that no solution seems to be forthcoming and that you had to get a new computer.
It would be very interesting to see a follow-up on this topic as it has started to appear in my MacBook Pro M1 with 16 GM RAM too. This one has Sonoma 14.1.1 with PowerPoint 16.79.1. Regardless of which pptx is open, after some hours open it also reaches 58 GB of memory usage (probably disk cached) and a message from the OS to close apps to avoid data loss and instability.
