Dear Community,
I have a persistent issue being discussed across various platforms, including Reddit and microsoft own community.
Despite numerous updates, the problem continues to exist, specifically on M1 MacBooks.
The core of the issue is that the MacBook tends to run out of memory and appears to resort to using storage as memory. This behavior results in notable performance issues with certain applications, especially Microsoft Office programs.
For excample, I recently encountered a situation where, while running PowerPoint version 16.78 on macOS version 13.0.1, my presentation encountered severe performance problems. On closer inspection, I found that Powerpoint was utilizing 58GB of RAM, which led to the program freezing.
It's imperative for us as a community to address this matter and find potential solutions.
Is there any working solution for this?

Nothing worked. Even a full factory reset and different outlook versions.
I did end up to sell M1 and buy m2 which don’t have the issue now.
There is for sure a bug but only % of people are affected.
Yesterday a colleague of mine managed to reach 187.07 GB in application memory via PowerPoint.
Specs:
MacBook Pro M3 Pro
Mac OS Sonoma 14.5 (23F79)
So it seems like this problem still persists and is not restricted to M1 Macbooks.
He had the application restarted just the evening before and the entire mac restarted on the weekend and only worked on a few PPT files with less than 20mb and was now forced to quite the application this morning. So I don't understand where this size comes from that quickly.
This is really strange to say the least.
It was a PPT shared via OneDrive/SharePoint where 2-3 colleagues collaborated together on.

I hate google suit, but I am now being forced to use it, because I am sick and tired of having to repoen my files every few minutes when editing animated content.

Yes, unfortunately. I didn't expect any insights/support from Microsoft themselves but at least I wanted to clarify some false hopes regarding any improvements for the newer chips (M2/M3). I guess it has nothing to do with the chip but with the OS or app in general.
Seems like it's not really correlated with pictures, since ARM RAM DOA postet a new record based on Excel, unless his customer was using pictures in Excel, who knows...

I agree with your assessment that it has nothing to do with hardware or which processor is running. It happens with Intel, as well.
