Can't open files from Teams in Office desktop app

I was able to finally fix this.

First I tried Office Repair and it didn't work

Then I tried deleting Powerpoint registry and uninstall and reinstall, again didn't work

Then I tried really really deleting Office using offscrub https://github.com/OfficeDev/Office-IT-Pro-Deployment-Scripts/tree/master/Office-ProPlus-Deployment/Remove-PreviousOfficeInstalls .. And then checking to see if anything remained and then deleting that before re-installing... Again didn't work

Then I tried Windows Repair... didn't work

Then I tried Windows Re-Install while keeping my files... didn't work

Finally, I did a Windows Clean Install.... That finally worked

These are your possible options... Microsoft Support is a joke... Don't waste your time... They'll never help you

Based on your description, when you try to open Word or Excel files in Teams, it fails to call Word or Excel desktop app. As far as I know, when you try to open the files in desktop app, it will use the URL protocol to open the related Office desktop app. In this scenario, please go to Settings > Apps & features > Default apps > Choose default apps by protocol, then scroll down and check if Excel is selected as the default app for MS-EXCEL.

Besides, regarding clear the cache in Teams folder, did you mean the following steps? If not, please make a try.

1. Fully exit the Microsoft Teams desktop client. To do this, either right click Teams from the Icon Tray and select ‘Quit’, or run Task Manager and fully kill the process.
2. Go to File Explorer, and type in %appdata%\Microsoft\teams.
3. Once in the directory, delete all files and restart Teams.

I recently started having the same issue. When I go to Settings**> Apps & features > Default apps >**Choose default apps by protocol there is no default app for word or excel. When I select choose default app, Im told there is no app and directed to Microsoft store to purchase.

I figured out how to solve this.

1. Open the Registry Editor (Start > Run > regedit.exe)
2. In the registry, go to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPoint.UriLink.16
3. You should see the following sub-keys--which the Registry Editor displays as folders: shell\open\command
4. If those keys (folders) don't exist, create them.
5. In the command key, set the following values:
   1. Name = (Default)
   2. Type = REG_SZ
   3. Data = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Root\Office16\protocolhandler "%1"

The desktop version of PowerPoint should now open when you select "open in desktop app" from SharePoint and Teams.

This works for Word and Excel as well, though the registry links are the below instead:

1. Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.UriLink.16
2. Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.UriLink.16

Thanks Marvin, I've tried both suggested solutions (office apps are related and the thing of deleting items from the Teams folder) but it didn't solve my problem. I can see the app window opening and loading but then it disappears and then nothing happens. I've checked the task manager to see if the app is running but it's not listed in the processes tab.
