High ram usage while idle on a windows 11 pc

This is obviously a Microsoft problem, and as usual they are not stepping up and helping.

While sometimes high memory usage could be caused by too many programs being run at the same time, not clearing caches, etc.

It is abundantly apparent that that is not the problem here. There is something in the software's background that is using this memory, either passively, or actively. But try and find a program that's using that, and it doesn't appear to be there.

But Microsoft won't help any of us, even just saving us time trying to do all the suggested fixes that don't make a difference because they are not the cause of the problem.

If Microsoft would just step up and say, Yes, Window 11 will use up about half of your RAM regardless of how much RAM you have. Most of us could just groan a little and say, 'Oh, OK' and get on with our day. But instead they let us waste hours and hours looking for a solution that doesn't currently exist.

And have you had the experience that when you are going through the FAQ, etc that you keep ending up where you started, again and again?

What is that? Total incompetence of a programmer or webpage designer? Or Microsoft deliberately setting up a goose chase?

Now if they really stepped up, they would either tell us why W 11 uses so much RAM, and even better, they could try to fix the issue.

What I truly don't understand is that I have 8GB of RAM and my system runs around 50%, but other users say they have 16 GB and it's still using about 50%. That's just odd.

Now if only there was a company that had access to a lot of computers, and access to Windows 11, and could install W 11 of a number of computers at the same time, boot them all up with nothing other than the operating system, and see what the memory is running at and report back to us. Oh, wait. That sounds like Microsoft. Apart from reporting back to us, of course.

Most of the time, I don't feel my computer is running any slower. It did once, but it was running on about 80% memory. At that time clearing the chaches worked. But that's the only time it worked.

Previously I had an issue with my Surface 3 charging.

Judging by support chats and other websites, lots of people had the same issue.

Again, Microsoft offered all these solutions that took hours to go through, but didn't resolve the issue.

My charging problem, which was an intermittent problem, slowly got worse to the point that I couldn't charge the computer.

In the end I realized that it was most likely faulty hardware problem. (The cable never fit snuggly into the charging port and over time it got sloppier and sloppier until I couldn't get it to charge.)

When I updated my computer, I was too scared to get another Surface model, even though I really liked it.

Bottom line: Microsoft, are you listening to your customers? Do you care?

I really wish there was some kind of legal avenue we could all pursue to get them to improve their customer support.

Note to moderators:

If you haven't worked it out by now, there is an issue with Windows 11 using too much memory.

Stop making us look up stuff and answering irrelevant questions, etc.

Your first question should be: Is it more than 50%? If not, the second question should be: Is your computer running slower than it should?

If the answer to these two questions is NO, then just tell us that's how it is.

If memory usage is running over 60% and the computer is slow, then start to offer suggestions.

I have 64GB of RAM and just starting windows uses 20GB and it doesn't add up to anything close in task manager

I understand that most applications run in the background, but it doesn't justify using all 16gb ram.

There are no 'unwanted' applications installed, I assume you mean Dell applications, which are not consuming a lot of memory.

Nothing in the image above justifies using 16gb of memory so there is definitely something that causes a memory leak or so after upgrading to windows 11.

Yeah I havent got a clue what this guys on about. Doing a quick rough add gives about 2GB usage from 3rd parties which is about 1/8th of his ram or 12.5% leaving another 43.5% unexplained.

I'm having the same issue with a PC here, 55-65% usage on idle with 8GB of memory

I have a relatively new Dell laptop that came with 8gb of RAM and Windows 11. My hard drive SSD has 60% free space. It was running at about about 55% memory in usage idle. After running Windows Update and installing all the updates, it still was using the same 55% of memory. My laptop had an empty memory slot, so I added a 2nd 8gb memory module, doubling the RAM to 16gb. But instead of cutting memory usage in half to 27%, it now uses 33-34% when idle. It seems like Windows 11 is using at least 20% more memory that it should be.
