How to Cancel Windows 11 update?

Thank you so much, JoJun. I feel totally elated to have seen this through. As woman approaching 70, I am definitely not a computer geek, but I can read and follow directions. I am embarrassed to have missed the stealth change in the pathway address, but it is a good lesson learned for the future. Also missed the part about adding in the WindowsUpdate folder because I was sticking to cut-and-paste as a way to avoid typing in the wrong information.

I will definitely read up on setting a system restore point before I ever again go into the directory. Which I hope will not be for a long time. Again, you were the key in pointing out the error in my registry path and for that I am very grateful.

Wow...you did it! This thread is so long so is it possible to post here exactly what I should do in the registry?

Great that you managed to solve the problem yourself!

Extra great that you went back and deleted the values from the wrong path.

I don't think they would have caused any harm, but tidying it up is definitely better.

For anyone else hesitating to do this because of the risk of messing up the registry: You can create a 'system restore point' that you can use to undo any mistakes. I won't derail the thread by explaining it here. Google it and you will find many pages and videos explaining the process.

Great News!! (I think!)

I had somehow missed the idea that I could ADD a folder for WindowsUpdate if there was none. So I added it in, followed the instructions all over again, and this time it did not revert to that wrong pathway once I made my entries. I also went back to that wrong pathway and deleted what I had added there yesterday. Re-started, went to Update, unpaused.... and it began installing a cumulative update for Windows 10! Windows 11 has been reduced to a "Great news! Your PC meets the minimum requirements for Windows 11" in the sidebar, but no attempt to start a download.

Thank you so much, JoJun, for pointing out what was going on in the pathway. When it started out seeming to accept the pasted-in correct pathway, I never noticed that it was reverting every time to the wrong one while I was busy carefully following the steps for the entries. Without your comment, I would still be spinning my wheels. But now (fingers crossed) it looks like the days of forced Windows 11 downloads are over. My computer checked for updates, found the cumulative update for Windows 10, and all proceeded totally normally.

To the other frustrated users in this thread: Take heart! It only took a few days of my life.
