Microsoft Authenticator is asking me to authenticate using Microsoft Authenticator to use Microsoft Authenticator

So first of all... Why is "microsoft Authenticator" not an option in the "Products" dropdown when choosing where this post should go? I'm just going to choose "Windows"... Sorry not sorry.

Also, I can't take a screenshot on the microsoft Authenticator app without it capturing a black image (thanks,) so here is an extremely low resolution webcam picture of my phone screen.

When I click "Passwords" section on the microsoft authenticator app, I see a button that says "Sign In".

So, I click the button, to sign in. Then, it asks me to authenticate using microsoft authenticator, but I am not signed in, and this is a "sensitive" page, so I have to enter the code displayed into microsoft authenticator, BUT I AM ON MICROSOFT AUTHENTICATOR ALREADY!!! Who designed this terrible app??? Cheap labor resources then you expect us to prefer microsoft edge over Chrome? LOL

Also, when I search my own question in "Bing", it doesn't come up, even if I type the title word for word. Does it go through some sort of not-mentioned approval process before my post becomes actually visible to the public, or is Bing just extremely bad at updating its search results in a timely manner?

Not rare, I have seen this multiple times in two organizations I have managed.

Here is a current fix: sign in to Entra, Navigate to Users, select Per User MFA in the top menu (may be behind asterisks); select user in MFA list and then select User MFA settings from top menu. Select "require selected user to provide contact methods again. Save. Delete and reinstall the app. The QR code will now appear when that user tries to login and it will prompt as if the first time.

It was rare in these forums before this thread LOWY Admin, and everyone using a Work and School account is in the wrong forums, since these forums are Community volunteer support for consumer users of Microsoft Personal accounts., which is why this thread so quickly became confusing. But then, obviously no one knows that the Microsoft Learn - Q&A forums actually exist, especially those in small organizations using Azure, so that created the initial problem for those.

The complications here exist because Microsoft had merged the older authenticator product they initially used with the Azure - Work and School accounts with the Microsoft Authenticator app used for Personal accounts a few years ago, likely to solve support and basic operational problems with the 2 different apps. But as a side effect, created the mass confusion you've seen displayed in this thread.

Supposedly the only place you can officially get aid with the Microsoft Authenticator is a sub-forum of those Learn - Q&A forums, but since I've actually been using the authenticator with a Personal account for several years, I've tried to provide what limited support I can for Personal accounts here, since if you go review that forum, it's at least as confusing to navigate as this thread if not worse.

It eventually became apparent that the deeper problem here was always related to either a lost, stolen or damaged phone or in rare cases possibly a corrupted Microsoft Authenticator installation.

Actually, you've pointed out another complication that occurred while this thread has existed, since the migration from various earlier authentication apps or systems to the newer Entra you've mentioned in your post is relatively recent, so that migration has likely made the management of these issues even more confusing for Admins, especially those supporting small business(es)

Since I don't personally have a Work or School account, I have no direct experience with those and could only use what I either found in Microsoft support documents or specific details from a few postings in this thread. Your post is quite helpful, but since we don't truly know whether everyone with a Work or School account has actually been migrated to Entra yet, making any blanket statement about this is dangerous at present.

Hopefully you now understand the issues I was up against when this thread began, and why it's such a mess, since I've had really no support from Microsoft to try and resolve the issues created by the brief history I've detailed above. In fact, if you find any threads in these forums about the Microsoft Authenticator, you'll see that if a Microsoft tagged individual gets to it first, they've been specifically instructed to redirect them to the Q&A Forums for the authenticator.

To solve the problem, you need to log into the account using another method other than the authenticator (password or Windows Hello (biometric), or text/email a code, etc.), then delete the authenticator option titled 'Send sign-in notification' from the list of verification methods in the account security section.

Once you've removed the old, invalid authenticator selection from your account the problem goes away, because it's no longer there to be used and you can set up the new phone's authenticator.

The reason it happens is simple, you got a new phone and didn't take the time to find out first how to properly switch from one phone to another or couldn't because you lost the old phone.

For one, thank you for accusing everyone with this problem of not taking the time to figure out how to do this correctly. I mean, it's not like anyone's phone ever breaks or anything, right? For two, what are you supposed to do if you cannot use the number currently attached to your Microsoft account? Not everyone has control over these things, and you being accusatory and posting answers that only work in certain situations is not very helpful.

Sorry, I know I'm being standoffish, but I've been trying to solve this problem for a while and you simply assuming that everyone who is having this problem is just lazy, when in reality I cannot afford a nice phone and my cheap one broke, is quite frustrating to me.

    Estella Helton,

I long ago learned that being 'nice', saying I'm sorry and other platitudes do nothing to teach the basic truth that people need to take responsibility for their own mistakes, which is why my often relatively abrupt and stern methods.

However, if you read carefully, the final portion of my text you included above ends simply as; "or you couldn't because you lost the old phone.", which inherently gives you the out that, of course, you can't possibly do this correctly if the phone is lost, stolen or unrepairable.

Unfortunately, Microsoft is so prone to the same useless platitudes and friendly methods, that they didn't simply block you from using your account long ago until you provided at least 3 ways to authenticate other than the authenticator, so it's unlikely you'll ever end up in the situation you and many others have by not maintaining multiple working ways of regaining access when real life creates such obvious situations as lost or damaged phones.

Since I'm a past computing and security professional, the fact these sorts of account lockouts could occur was obvious to me, so I long ago added not only the default phone number and email options, but also others on top of the authenticator which as you've learned can disappear with the phone itself. That includes the optional Recovery Code and alternate email address, for which I use my Gmail account that also supports the smartphone itself.

The question for you at the moment is whether you had enabled 2-Step verification in your Microsoft account, because that means you'll need to have 2 methods of verification available to recover your account, while if you'd only used the authenticator app without enabling 2-Step, you'll only need a single method and can also try using the account recovery form and self-help information regarding that found in the following document.

Note the following at the start of that page, since it may work without needing to use the form.

Tip: This information assumes you've already tried our Sign-in Helper tool. If you haven't, try the tool first.

Help with the Microsoft account recovery form - Microsoft Support

Please read the 'More tips' section below the 'Account recovery form' button on that page before starting with the form, since that tells you how to increase your chances of success.

If you're having trouble using the form, create a new, separate thread in these same forums for help, no one else in this huge thread wants to continue to follow this conversation and other people who are better at using the form than me can aid you with it.

    Good luck,

    Rob
