I am trying to update windows to 22h2 in an attempt to troubleshoot another issue i am having (games crashing when booting up dx12 with shaders with "out of video memory" error, same games work on dx11 though) and i have tried multiple times to update to 22h2 but it continuously fails. Windows will download the update, restart, install the update up to 25% and crash with blue screen showing an error with NTFS.sys i believe. So maybe the drive is corrupted by i've do so much to try to fix that.

i have tried to the SFC scannow steps, chkdsk /f c:,

i've tried 2 separate m.2 drives booting win 11 on them each with a genuine microsoft win 11 usb/key,

i've done multiple clean installs on both drives

i've formatted/deleted the info on drives to do a clean install

i've tried multiple graphics cards for dx12/shader issue, same problem, so not the cards.

i've rolled back gpu drivers, reinstalled drivers, used DDU as well for that.

i've updated all my drivers in general.

installed cc cleaner to check rootkey/scan computer

installed malwarebytes to check for viruses/etc.

i've tried different ram, tried different ram slots and combinations like single slot, dual channel, quad channel

reapplied thermal paste on the cpu

removed/installed cmos battery

messed with shader cache in both nvidia and tried multiple pagefile configurations for virtual memory

tries start up repair which ends with something like (unable to fix the issue)

i think there's more that i've tried but ive been at this for about 12 work hours over the last couple of weeks with no success with my DX12/shader crashing issue and now this windows update issue.

My system specs are:

msi 4090 gaming trio

32gb 5600mhz corsair ram

1000w msi psu

asus z690-e wifi mobo

13900k processor

i'm desperate for answers for both the windows update issue and the games with dx12 crashing immediately at boot with preloading shaders like Hogwarts, callisto protocol, dead space remastered, kena, MW2, etc.

    Alright so probably one of the last posts that need to be made here.

    After testing a bit more, i came to the conclusion that the i9 processor was ultimately at fault for the crashes/dx12/corruption issues in general. initially i thought it was either a drive issue or driver issue, maybe a registry issue but after testing a new i9 and a new i5 processor on a new motherboard that worked perfectly fine and then throwing in the original i9 in the new motherboard and finding that i only received the crashing/corrupted issues with that particular processor, i was able to determine it was mostly the i9 processor causing the problems.

    Also, the asus motherboard is pretty much shot. it will not detect m.2 pcie lanes 1-3 on the board and because of that, i cannot boot up windows anymore. i tried to fix that as well with flashbacks but no success. whether or not the motherboard was faulty before or after is not known. either part could have affected the other.

    either way, i was able to get a refund/store credit for the processor and motherboard but i am not going to return the i5, ram, motherboard and case i bought to test this issue in the first place since i can just use that as a back up. So i just used the store credit to get a new motherboard to replace the asus and i am throwing the i5 in that with the spare 3090 gpu so that i will have a high end back up in case i get any more issues (please no lol)

    going to set that pc up later today to make sure everything runs well but i expect no problems. if i have any, i'll be back lol.

    I wanna thank everyone for the input and suggestions, especially saltgrass for sticking it out for as long as you did.

    As much as a pain it was to do all this troubleshooting, i did learn a lot so at least something came out of it.

    you may want to test some other dx12 games with preloaded shaders to make sure its not a major issue like what im experiencing.

    once i can get my hands on another i9 13900k processor, im going to see if it works in my system thats failing. i think i saw some people getting similar issues with that processor.

    I just reinstalled my system due to this situation and I wanted to test a problem with an Apple AirPods Pro 2 headphones regarding the microphone. When the game decided not to work, I had gotten to the part where you get all the zombies coming at once. The next time I tried to start it is when it failed.

    I do not know if I will be reinstalling that game. I might just stay with Portals 2 ;)

    did the game crash when trying to boot it up in dx12?

    try dx11.

    did you try any other games that have preloaded shaders like hogwarts, MW2, deadspace, etc.?

    Just to let you know, I have been running Collisto for a few days. Yesterday I tried to start the game and got a crash from Unreal and the game would not open.

    I suppose there is a possibility that some type of damage had been done to your processor.
