Windows Update Troubleshooter failing to run, anyone else having problems?

Both my Desktop and Laptop are suffering the same problem when attempting to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Operating system is Windows 11 24H2 with all updates applied to 11 December 2024 including KB5048667. After going through to the point where the troubleshooter runs, I get "I'm sorry.  I was unable to run the Windows Update diagnostic. I might need to transfer you to an agent to help solve your problem." I've done all the obvious (sfc, DISM) and no problems were found. I'm thinking it must be a generic problem as it happens on both my Windows 11 machines.

    This is happening to me too. My PC is only 8 weeks old.

    The problem started when my PC couldn't install the latest KB5050009 update and kept giving the error code 0x800705b4. I tried running the troubleshooter and got the same message as everyone else - that it couldn't run the diagnostics. I have also tried other wrokaround as suggested here and online but none of the work

    With so many people experiencing this, is it not fair to assume the new Windows update is the cause rather than our systems? More to the point will this have a drastic effect on our systems going forward if we can't get the updates or get the troubleshooter fixed?

    Hi Ramesh Srinivasan,

    I have the same problem as LeeRelph, except that my error code is 0x800706be. When I run net start wuauserv, Windows update service starts normally, then the update KB5050009 starts to download, but then stops and I still get that error code:

    Hi Isabellepar,

    Many others are facing the same error (0x800706be). This requires detailed troubleshooting, including running a Process Monitor boot trace.

    Please repair install Windows 11 via Settings.

    I am having the same issue. I also tried the same steps that you did. The only other thing I can suggest is to revert back to the most recent previous version date of the operating system before the KB5048667 update tried to install. On my system that was on 12/‎13/‎2024. I am trying to figure out a workaround for doing that...in the Settings/Systems/Recovery menu the selection option to do this (Go Back) is grayed out saying "This option is no longer available on this PC." If it is still active on your system, try that and then pause Windows updates for at least a week. If someone has a command line routine for doing this by entering the steps manually in Windows Powershell (accessed by right clicking on the 4-windows icon at far left in the task bar and selecting Terminal in the popup window), PLEASE share. I could not find a manual Go Back workaround by searching the Windows web site. With so many people having this issue, at some point Microsoft will have to roll out another update that supersedes the KB5048667 failed installation, but we don't know when that will be.
