Windows Update will not work after Windows 10 2004 (OS Build 19041.450) update

After upgrading PCs to the Windows 10 2004 build, Windows Update is giving the following message:  We couldn't connect to the update service.  We'll try again later, or you can check now.  If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet.

I'm seeing these types of entries in the WindowsUpdate Log:

Here are some of the troubleshooting steps I’ve done so far that haven’t worked:

  • Sfc /scannow
  • Dism /online /cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Ran a Windows script to reset/clear Windows update.  Basically stops all the services, renames the WindowsUpdate folders (catroot2 & SoftwareDistribution) and then restarts the services

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

  • Ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter
  • Tried LAN and Wifi connections

In addition to the troubles with Windows Updates I found that Defender failed to get updates on the same PC.  The excerpt from mpcmdrun.log

    MpCmdRun: Command Line: MpCmdRun.exe  -SignatureUpdate

    MpEnsureProcessMitigationPolicy: hr = 0x1

Moreover, during start of any MS Office 2016 Pro application I receive the popup message

"Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this product. You should repair the Office program by using Control Panel."

After pressing OK the application is closed.

Of course, the repair doesn't help because the repair itself cannot be finished showing errors.

I am sure all three events are connected with each other. I have more than one hundred identical PCs with the same configuration updated to 19041.450 - and about twenty of them revealed all the above errors after 4th of September update.

I tried a lot of things including installation of root certificates and still nothing. I manually installed September Cumulative Update on one of the corrupted PCs. No luck.

I believe it is time for Microsoft to give serious attention to this failure.

I'm assuming you meant DNS and yes I've flushed DNS and have re-registered it.  I've even changed my DNS servers to see if that would help.  No luck.

Er, I have not kept track of technet migrations over to general Q&A. I guess it stays here unless you are using WSUS, which you are not.

This is going to be difficult to troubleshoot without ability to get into the network. You should start by examining the Event logs for any one computer. This includes applications, system, and the Windows-Update log under Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows. You likely also need to capture network traffic to see if you can narrow down the point of failure. I do not know if you are equipped to handle that.

In the meantime, I'll open this up for more comments but the level of expertise here is usually not adequate enough to answer these types of questions since your issue is more tilted toward small business.

try resetting the DSN manually. it is a connection issue to Microsoft.  i had the same issue kind of. once connected defender caught some rather nasty trojans.
