Windows 10 1803 Update Error 0xc1900101

Dell XPS 17 L series laptop. 1803 installs, reboots, then froze and shuts down (auto-power off) during the 2nd reboot. 

Upon turning on, Windows rolled back the 1803 install, then we're back where we started. 

Came here, learned that on the Dell's I need to turn off the virtualization. So went into the BIOS and turned it off. Then restarted. Forced the 1803 update to install. Took almost an hour, but that's all done. I didn't bother turning the virtualization thing back on.

I've switched off virtualization before. Didn't work.

Apparently, the problem on my side is common with a range of ASUS laptops.

Thanks a lot! After tearing my hair out for a bit when the usual stuff wasn't working, I was about to perma-pause the update and worry about it when it got to be EOL time for 1709. Saw your post, figured it was something quick to try, so I hopped into the BIOS ands switched off Virtualization. *poof* No more update problems. Now if only I could get Windows to stop replacing the custom keyboard driver I have repeatedly told it not to update or replace...

Believe me, I feel your pain my friend. Last Friday morning I turned on my computer right before I got in the the shower so i could print out a report for work when I was done; I came back 35 minutes later and the update screen was on! I was late for work and had to get it printed at a coffee shop. 

You are right, this would be unacceptable in any other business. What's scary is that we have no control anymore, many of the options are grayed our or we are denied access, and once people learn how to work around these issues the company issues another update! I managed to set one of my laptops so that it didn't update for almost a year (June 2017); on Monday I turned it on and I got an update restart message after about an hour! 

There are several class action lawsuits against Microsoft already; their employees have admitted they release updates way before they are ready; we are forced beta testers. You would think that they would have learned not to rush these updates, or at least have the decency to fix them immediately, instead they admit theyre broken and put a bunch of DIY steps on their website....and when all else fails; "A clean install may be necessary". 

If there was a decent, bare bones alternative OS, that you could easily build on to using a wide range of options, all without having a degree in computer science it would take off.

 I would like to let you know that controlling Windows updates is somewhat difficult in Windows 10, but you can see the options here:

If you have Windows 10 Pro , Methods 4 and 5 are the best way to resolve this as Windows would always ask you to before downloading updates.

Another way would be to use a 3rd party app like Stop Updates10. which allows you to disable Windows 10 Updates with a single click.

this method will turn off Windows Updates permanently:

• Click your Start Button, type services and hit Enter
• Scroll down to find Windows Update Service
• If it is Started, double click it and stop that service
• Close the services App
• Click your Start Button, type cmd, right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'
• Run this command and hit Enter

sc delete wuauserv

Close Command Prompt

Restart your PC

• If you also have the Update Assistant installed on your system:
• The Update Assistant in Windows 10 cannot be uninstalled, but you can get rid of it
• Click your Start Button, type Task Scheduler and hit enter
• In the left Pane, navigate to: Windows - Update Orchestrater
• Right Pane double click 'Update Assistant'
• Click on Triggers Tab
• On each of the triggers ( At login . . . etc.) double click and uncheck 'Enabled'
• Under 'Update Assistant, there is another event 'Update Assistant CalendarRun'
• Do the same for all triggers on that event
• Restart your system, that's It!

When finished and after a system restart, open the services app and make sure the Windows Update Service is now gone . . .
