Error Code: 0x80072f76 0x20017. Windows media creation tool.

I've disabled the defender and other software for malware and virus protection and tried moving the executable to desktop and then launching it. I don't have an idea whats wrong with it! Any help is much appreciated.

I was able to solve it on a 2016 Lenovo laptop by disabling antivirus until next reboot and pointing my DNSs to Google Ones.

Hope this helps someone else as well.

    You can either run setup from within running windows 10, you do not need this for upgrading from windows 7.

    Or you can run setup from bootable DVD or USB with windows 7 or 10 and run setup, you can read about this in groovypost article on how to run clean install.

    I think the media creation tools will downloads iso file version 10.0.16299.15, and if you upgrade using the windows update it will be updated to version 10.0.16299.19

    ok guys. i think I know the problem.

    You need to update your pc to the latest creators update.

    It seems to work now, although I have not finished creating the bootable drive yet

    At the moment it looks like a lucky draw. 

    Yesterday my laptop got updated to 170, OS Build 16299.19.

    Tried the media creation tool & it had the same issue. Just checked the properties & the version number was showing 10.0.16299.15 which is strange. It should be 16299.19.

    Hope they sort it out soon. Sad that even with millions of users Microsoft cant provide proper support.
