Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

The directions for re-installing Pro for Workstations Edition are on the Download Windows 10 site. They say to install Pro Edition and then switch to Pro for Workstations via the Microsoft Store app.

Meanwhile, if you create an ISO from that same page and mount it in Windows, you will find a file named product.ini in the Sources folder of the ISO. This file contains generic Product Keys, which will not activate nor license the associated Editions of Windows 10. However, if you enter the generic Product Key for Pro Workstation, where it shows professionalworkstation=_____-_____-_____-_____-2YV77, in the change Product Key area of the Settings App, your device will upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for Workstations edition.

If you are already running Windows 10 S, Pro, Education, Professional Education, or Enterprise and some others, the change will be almost instantaneous. Your Windows 10 activation will vanish just as quickly.  Home Editions will require a Restart and some install time, as it upgrades.

NOTE: Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will not activate, nor be licensed without purchasing a license for it via the Store app. I do not know what the price will be.

Also, there is no way to revert back to Home Edition aside from a clean install of Windows 10.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations was released, but its not available at retail, its an OEM bundle because you need to purchase expensive hardware such as XEON processors and other workstation class hardware.

Its up on MSDN Subscriber Downloads if you have access to that. Gonna try it out on my Z210 this week when I get the chance.

The upgrade is already stubbed out in the Store but not yet published to the Store menu.   There are already folks in the Insider forum using it on existing systems.  The instructions for installation and maintenance are in threads there.  It is being done in three different scenarios which produce both the hybrids and the full installation versions as spelled out currently in instructions to OEMs.  Yes we are getting it for existing systems.

MSFT has done that in the past.  Windows XP Pro x64 was released through OEMs because of the unavailabilty of 64bit device drivers for most of the devices then in use.  The OS was released through OEMs who committed to obtaining 64bit drivers for the hardware configurations being sold.

This is a little different because W10PfW does work fine on consumer devices.  Don Cuthbert has posted details of how to convert Windows 10 Home and Pro to W10PfW in the Insider forum.  Perhaps he will do so here as well.  All the procedures are approved techniques (in places like TechNet) etc.
