Error 0x80070bc2 when Windows 10 update trying to install KB4048955 for version 1709

Windows 10 home, new computer with CPU Intel 8700K working well, version 1709 installed.   

I noticed that windows update gives error 0x80070bc2 when trying to install 2017-11 Cumulative update for Windows Version 1709 for amd64-based systems KB4048955 (and before KB4043961) ... getting a sort of a loop as it requires a restart to finish installing but at any restart gives the same message and does not install.  

Tried various things such as sfc scan, dism, troubleshooting windows update, manual install etc.  Nothing works.  Other updates such as KB4048951 and KB4051613 installed correctly in the last few days.  Can someone help?

This seems to have worked for me:

  • Right-click on Windows key and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type the following commands in Command Prompt window. To execute them, press Enter after each one. 

SC config wuauserv start= auto

SC config bits start= auto

SC config cryptsvc start= auto

SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

  • Finally, restart your PC and try to install the update that was previously returning the 0x80070bc2 error.

    Well........it was a good idea........but just wouldn't work, after trying some dozen times without success.

    Swan, that is where the incomplete Fall Creators Update has left me: at version 1709, build 1629.125. I'm unable to  restore my Mozilla Firefox or Thunderbird but the rest is working.

    FWIW, I have a HP DeskPro 400 G1 MT purchased new in 2014. It has an Intel i3 4330 CPU, 16 gigs of RAM and an EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1050Ti GPU. It was problem free before the latest Upgrade arrived. The Fall Creators Update was disruptive and destructive and incomplete. It's taken two weeks to stabilize my partially upgraded system.

    The next Windows 10 Update will be, "Windows Redstone" (as in the Redstone rocket?). Redstone will begin incorporating Linux. A Linux based OS will eventually replace Windows OS as it has already done at Apple. At that time I was an Apple user. Apple announced that OS 10 would not run on existing hardware, or, run current software. Every Apple user had to eventually and quickly buy new stuff which was very expensive. I came back to the less expensive alternative,  a Windows PC. Apple has a small user base and their products are rigidly controlled. MS Windows has a huge user base and the hardware & software encourage invention, innovation, non-conformity and diversity. If MS told it's customer base to buy new stuff, there would be lynchings in Redmond, WA.

    So, I'll tough it out and cut 'em some slack. But unless MS puts me on the payroll, I'm on pause with further Updates of Windows 10. I'm not a beta tester.

    Had the same problem with that AMD64 update on and Intel dual Pentium E6700.  I believe this system made by Acer back around 2010 has an AMD chip somewhere in the chipset on the motherboard, but it is not part of the main guts, it may be associated with the virtual USB based touch screen controller.  My machine is an early touch screen All-in-One.
