Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

All but the last step completed successfully. After entering I got "failure when attempting to copy boot files". Any other ideas I can try? All I did was update my computer last night, and boot up today with this endless "rollback/windows10" loop that go no where but restart and end up at the same blue troubleshooting screen.

Thank you so much, ZackJudd!  I was so frustrated trying to get my computer to work.  I am not a techie by any stretch, and your very detailed instructions were exactly what I needed.  My computer is back to normal -- all files are there, and it's acting normally.  I am so thankful to you for posting!

Thank you, this works for my laptop! I was talking to Microsoft technician and this is one of the video sent to me which I think is helpful to demonstrate your Step 3 - 8 before you proceed with the rest of the steps.

For what it's worth, I used the creation tool and downloaded it directly to my USB drive. Also, and more importantly, when running the setup, I was given the opportunity to not only keep my files but also keep the apps. Once it was fully installed, about an hour or so later, I had all my programs and files still there and a working computer. Thanks for all who gave input.

Lucky, I didn't have the option to keep my apps.  Haha. But nice! Glad to help! And glad to be un-bricking people's computers. 😂
