Metadata staging failed event 131

This is an FYI to anyone.

Since Win8-10, when changing something in Services, make sure you run as Admin.

Right Click Services, Run as Administrator.

Otherwise you can change stuff until the cows come home, but as soon as you restart everything is back the way it was. Side note, if the system is on a Domain, GPO will also change it back everytime you login.

I too, on my personal system, have had the Event ID 131 0x80072EFD Metadata staging failed over and over in the Event logs, as errors. Searching through the Web, I found a Win 8 Post for changing the url in the Registery:

"http://dmd.metaservices.microsoft.com/dms/metadata.svc"

It may have helped folks with Win8 8.1, but didn't work on my Win10 systems. I upgraded from Win7 U on both. It seems to me, that the url has changed for Win 10, but as of today 11/29/15 I cannot find what the new url is.

If anyone finds it please let me know.

I have also been receiving the same Metadata Staging errors.  The computer works fine.

A review of the error file says that the source is the "Display Setup Manager". 

I entered the "Services" file and found Display Setup Manager.  This file was not running.  I

started the file and about 10 minutes later checked it again.  The file was stopped.  I started it again

and checked the "Event Viewer"  I saw that the number of errors for Metadata Staging was reduced.

I believe that I found the cure.  However, my Display Setup Manager is shutting down for some reason.  Does anyone have some suggestions?

I've run SFC Scanow and no errors show up.  The computer is fine.

Device Set-up Manager stops and starts periodically it is not a continuous service.

The Metadata Staging refreshes hardware and devices periodically by design.

If you think you have resolved your issue here is a quick test for you to perform:

Control Panel>

Hardware and Sound>

Devices and Printers>

Now right click with the mouse on blank space within your devices page and click 'refresh'

this is forcing the Device Setup Manager into action.

Now check your event log and let us know your results - are you still free of event ID 131

Amtino is fed up, as is Mazda700. There is no actual error in Win 10 (or any Win) responsible for this Event Viewer error 131 in Administrative Events. It's MS's server which isn't resolving...

"http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=252669&clcid=0x409"

...quickly enough. The unofficial fix is to replace that address in the registry with...

"http://dmd.metaservices.microsoft.com/dms/metadata.svc"....

Now/then MS will cure the server, but it never will last. Amtino has quit trusting them for it, & she can't be blamed for that.

I'm sure you meant Device Setup Manager - not Display...

Set yours to look like this...

...It appears to be OK for it to have a service status of "stopped"...

...It will activate when necessary, such as when opening "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers" & refreshing the display - & also refreshing the Event Viewer display to see the additions (if any).
