KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets. AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Hi,

Have tried to update my Win 8.1/64 for the last 4-5 weeks.
1. I have tried automatic download a number of times and get the same error code others. I have followed the instructions above - and elsewhere in the thread - without any success.
2. I have downloaded the 64 bit offline installers Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu with clearcompressionflag.exe, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2959977, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018) and KB2919355 does not install.
3. Run sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Any suggestions? 850+ users in the organization I work for are supposed to "upgrade" to Win 8.1 this year but this is a nightmare.

Good Luck is right... you'll probably need plenty of it.

When I try the DISM steps outlined above. My system just never finishes any of the DISM commands,,, after 'running' for hours and hours and hours. Microsoft may have goofed badly this time.

Well I'm fixed.

Acquired 8.1 x64 ISO and did an in-place update as MS told me over email. chose to keep all apps and download updates.

40 minutes later I'm on 8.1 update 1 and all up to date. Just had to activate with my existing OEM key.

Now this worked for me and it probably will work for some of you but this is truly a stupid solution for a problem that was obviously not caused by us users, and considering most people would end up having to pay for the ISO that is a disgusting way to fix a problem.

I still honestly hope that if MS does not fix this problem for 100% of users in an update that someone does start a lawsuit. This was disgusting and i have no doubt at all that there are probably thousands, if not millions of users that have no idea this is happening and will never fix it leaving their systems completely venerable. I've been a huge supporter of microsoft going on almost 20 years now and I've never felt so ashamed about it until this incident.

TLDR:

Get 8.1 x64 or x32 ISO depending on your instal, while in windows boot up the disk, check for updates in the setup and do update and keep all apps, settings, and files. Once it's done you'll be on 8.1 Update 1 and you just have to reactivate with your original key.

The only ISO that will work for this the official one from technet/MSDN.

I totally agree with your assessment. I was a supporter of MS for 11 years...not anymore. My next OS will be Linux.
