KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    Hello, M W 67

I gather from the discussion you've begun: "If your MS 8.1 Update 1 Failed...please post here", and from your posts to this thread, to the one I linked as containing a possible solution, to "Have Any Microsoft Moderators contacted Microsoft about the bug in Windows 8.1 Update?", & to others (I must be a glutton for punishment, as I've read every post on those threads - as of this writing, 230+ pages in those threads/discussions alone, not to mention the many, many other pages in similar threads here & in other forums), that you've basically tried everything various folks have posted to resolve this problem with your machine, including what's outlined in the Windows Club article "Fix: Windows 8.1 Update fails to install" (I presume, as the title is so similar to that for your discussion) and the new support article "Install the latest Windows 8.1 Update".  I can only imagine your frustration with this problem, which seems to be triggered by a variety of different things (various VPN and Proxy implementations, "in-box" applications, injudicious use of Piriform's CCleaner & registry cleaners, insufficient size of the hidden system reserved partition, lack of prerequisites, host bus adaptors, usb hubs, and various other hardware, aggressive interaction by anti-virus solutions with such a complex kernel update, the lack of a C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools folder, the use of Classic Shell, and more), mostly on OEM builds (for instance, I've had no problems installing the 5-in-1 2919355 WUpD on fresh builds constructed from a bloat-free wim).

With that last in mind, and given the reliability history of Microsoft's documentation (very high) and the ensured-compatibility (forwards and backwards) history of even the largest vendors large and small (not so high), the fact that so many of these triggers are being found to be so OEM-dependent seemingly points to a lack of adherence to Microsoft guidelines (although considering the recent reliability history for WUpD, I'm far from ruling out Redmond's desire to unify various devices onto a single platform, as expressed with Windows 8, as being the root cause of the problem, despite the burgeoning evidence that the former consideration appears @ this point to be the most likely source); given also the virtually-unique nature of each user's computer after the first installation of just about any program (whether 3rd-party or made in Redmond), I highly suspect that there will be no Fixit or other "one size fits all" solution forthcoming, and that we'll all be resolving this on a case-by-case basis.  I do expect that the 13 May deadline will likely be extended - but I've been wrong before, dadgummit...

One thing I didn't seem to see in your previous posts, however, was exactly what error/stop code (or codes) WUpD is returning for you.  Might I be so bold as to inquire what you're seeing?

I am really surprised, this thread has calmed down so much!?

That is because all people have solved their problema with de 5/5/14 patch, or all have given up?

Me too not solved here. I am so tried of trying and restarting. Just get me a new, usable update MS, Plz!

Repair install is the only thing that worked for me. (Be sure to tell it to keep your files and settings.)

    Well I'm fixed.

Acquired 8.1 x64 ISO and did an in-place update as MS told me over email. chose to keep all apps and download updates.

40 minutes later I'm on 8.1 update 1 and all up to date. Just had to activate with my existing OEM key.

Now this worked for me and it probably will work for some of you but this is truly a stupid solution for a problem that was obviously not caused by us users, and considering most people would end up having to pay for the ISO that is a disgusting way to fix a problem.

I still honestly hope that if MS does not fix this problem for 100% of users in an update that someone does start a lawsuit. This was disgusting and i have no doubt at all that there are probably thousands, if not millions of users that have no idea this is happening and will never fix it leaving their systems completely venerable. I've been a huge supporter of microsoft going on almost 20 years now and I've never felt so ashamed about it until this incident.

    TLDR:

Get 8.1 x64 or x32 ISO depending on your instal, while in windows boot up the disk, check for updates in the setup and do update and keep all apps, settings, and files. Once it's done you'll be on 8.1 Update 1 and you just have to reactivate with your original key.

The only ISO that will work for this the official one from technet/MSDN.
