KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    Nice Vivian...

However, after following this to the letter Windows update tells me there are no updates and the stand alone

installer of KB2919355(dated April 16) now states that it is not applicable to my computer?!

Having previously watched KB2919355 install to 100% supposedly without error and then fail numerous times is frustrating...

Thanks, I found and printed every key I purchased. Just have to figure out which is the 8 Pro key for the bad machine. The ones I did the complete Pro Pack on seem ok. The PC giving me trouble, I bought the Media Center as an add-on for Win 8 Pro. That's the reason I believe it is failing. The irony is, I've never used the Media Center app. I watch everything through browsers on the desktop because the apps had terrible resolution and playback on a big screen LED TV.

I also installed Windows Media Center as an add-on to Windows 8 Pro for both machines, and both successfully installed the 8.1 update.  Which is why I posted - just to throw it out there...

After several unsuccessful install attempts, the steps above (posted by Pleonasm on page 62) finally worked.

    Thanks !!

In my previous unsuccessful attempts, the following steps from the list above were missing: 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10.  Some of the six KBs in step 11 demanded a reboot, which I did before installing the next KB.

I'm willing to give this a shot... documenting my results in case it is helpful to Liz or anyone else with corrupted component stores.

        1. Verify that Windows Update KB2919442 is installed by examining Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\View update history and, if not, download and install it (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42162)

    Verified, installed 3/17/2014

        2. Download the Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355, published 4/16/2014) (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335), including all six files:

Re-downloaded the files in case they have changed.

    1. If it does not already exist, add an empty System Tools folder to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Verified from a command prompt that the folder exists.

        4. Run the following command with administrative privileges:

             dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

Result: "The specified package is not a valid Windows package."

        5. Reboot PC

Rebooted. (15 seconds... I love my SSD.)

        6. Run the following two commands with administrative privileges:

             dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

             dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

Result of /restorehealth: Gets to 20%, waits, then "Restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired. Error 0x800f081f"

Result of /startcomponentcleanup: "Error 14098 The component store has been corrupted."

        7. Run the Microsoft Fixit tool for Windows Update (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058)

Result: "Troubleshooting was unable to automatically fix all of the issues found."

Problems installing recent updates: Not fixed

Check for missing or corrupted files: Detected

Service registration is missing or corrupt: Fixed

    Windows Update Error 0x80073712(2014-04-21-T-05_44_10P): Fixed

        8. Select and run “Cleanup system files” by using the Disk Cleanup for Windows utility (cleanmgr.exe)

Cleanup system files is not an option. Nothing done here.

        9. Reboot PC

    Rebooted.

        10. Temporarily disable anti-virus software while executing the following step

This is the one thing on this list I think I have never tried.  AV is Windows Defender; turned off Real Time Protection.

        11. Manually install the updates (downloaded in step 2) in the following order:

             KB2919355... Failed

Since 355 failed, I did not try the others.
