I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

Thanks, I found and printed every key I purchased. Just have to figure out which is the 8 Pro key for the bad machine. The ones I did the complete Pro Pack on seem ok. The PC giving me trouble, I bought the Media Center as an add-on for Win 8 Pro. That's the reason I believe it is failing. The irony is, I've never used the Media Center app. I watch everything through browsers on the desktop because the apps had terrible resolution and playback on a big screen LED TV.

I stumbled onto this thread from an article I was reading...

I didn't read all 68 pages, but did read enough mentioning "Windows 8 Pro with Media Center" not successfully installing the 8.1 update.

I have a Dell XPS M1530 Windows 8 Pro with Media Center and an Alienware M17XR2 with Windows 8 Pro and Media Center - both made the 8.1 update successfully (thankfully...)

I just thought I would post, because some are thinking media center may be the culprit - but since I have 2 computers with Media Center that did install the update correctly, it might not be.

I hope MS gets you a fix soon, for it is NO fun to have a perfectly running system and have an update cause issues...

    Hang in there...

I want to uninstall Media Center and see if it works. But I am having trouble finding the registration for it.

I'm trying to figure out if the current license key is going to work again if I reinstall, or even if my original license key is going to work if I re-install. The problem being I have a dozen or so licenses from building PC's for friends and family and am not sure which is which during that period.

IIRC, I believe I got a completely new Windows license key when I installed Media Center, originally under Windows Pro 8.0.  It was available as a free upgrade for a limited time.  I ended up restoring a previous disk image because I felt that Media Center used up too much disk space, so I didn't actually uninstall it.

It's only a guess, but I would think that the component store would still keep the package info, even if you uninstalled the feature.  So you would likely not even need to enter the new key again, but I'm not 100% sure.

By the way, I'm having this DISM component store corruption issue on a non-Media Center 32-bit machine, so I don't think media center is the culprit.
