KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

I want to uninstall Media Center and see if it works. But I am having trouble finding the registration for it.

I'm trying to figure out if the current license key is going to work again if I reinstall, or even if my original license key is going to work if I re-install. The problem being I have a dozen or so licenses from building PC's for friends and family and am not sure which is which during that period.

My experiences somewhat confirm this.. I only get sfc errors AFTER attempting the DISM repairs - they were never there BEFORE!!

Oddly, it's usually /scanhealth reporting  "good to go, ready to restore" and then /restorehealth saying, "sorry, no can do". Mind you - BOTH OF THESE were 100% completed OK before I ran the StartComponentCleanup...

    Bingo!

I would just like to add that the Scheduled Task  under Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/Servicing/StartComponentCleanup does not appear to corrupt the component store like the DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup does.  I've even run it on demand to test.  However, it does not seem to cleanup the component store at all.  I've disabled it for now, just to be safe, but I get the same DISM /online /cleanup-image /analyzecomponentstore results after running it multiple times.

Following several unsuccessful attempts to install the Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355), each of which produced error code 80070002, the following sequence succeeded on my Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) PC.

    1. Verify that Windows Update KB2919442 is installed by examining Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\View update history and, if not, download and install it (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42162)
    2. Download the Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355, published 4/16/2014) (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42335), including all six files:

         Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2932046-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2934018-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2937592-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2938439-x64.msu

         Windows8.1-KB2959977-x64.msu

    1. If it does not already exist, add an empty System Tools folder to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
    2. Run the following command with administrative privileges:

         dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    1. Reboot PC
    2. Run the following two commands with administrative privileges:

    dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

    1. Run the Microsoft Fixit tool for Windows Update (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058)
    2. Select and run “Cleanup system files” by using the Disk Cleanup for Windowsutility (cleanmgr.exe)
    3. Reboot PC
    4. Temporarily disable anti-virus software while executing the following step
    5. Manually install the updates (downloaded in step 2) in the following order:

         KB2919355

         KB2932046

         KB2959977

         KB2937592

         KB2938439

         KB2934018

Thank you to all the prior contributors to this thread, from whom the above amalgamated sequence was developed.

After several unsuccessful install attempts, the steps above (posted by Pleonasm on page 62) finally worked.

    Thanks !!

In my previous unsuccessful attempts, the following steps from the list above were missing: 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10.  Some of the six KBs in step 11 demanded a reboot, which I did before installing the next KB.
