What mouse and keyboard do you have?

The mouse is a Microsoft Wireless 3500 and the keyboard is a Unicomp bent spring keyboard, like the original IBM Model M. Both are connected vis USB 2.0 ports to the rear panel of an Asus motherboard.

    Hi Susan

I don't know how to get around the 'Access is denied' messages, so I wasn't able to send you my logs by email, but I can do steps e & f:

    e. Yes, my machine has KB2533552 installed, 11/05/2011

    f. My machine was installing updates (about 43 or so) in the morning, which took longer than I expected and I had to leave for work.  I stopped the updates (by clicking 'stop' after 19 had installed successfully, which included KB2862330.  Then I shut down the laptop instead of restarting it, and went to work.)

At work the machine booted up, and if I remember correctly that was when it got to 32%, stopped for a while, and the next thing I remember seeing was a Blue Screen, which I photographed in case it had clues.  It said "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL", and the next bit started "STOP: 0x0000000A...".

Then it rebooted, and I got "Failure configuring Windows updates Reverting changes."

I'm afraid I don't remember the exact sequence of events really, but I found that if I booted into Safe Mode twice (the first time would always fail) I could do a Restore back to before the updates.  Then (stupidly?) I started trying to work out what it was.

I halved the number of updates, and tried again.  Strangely, the next time my laptop hung at the BIOS startup screen, and I was only able to get it going by pressing F12 (it's a Dell Latitude) and selecting a boot drive.  The Bluetooth light was on (none of the others were) and there was a Bluetooth hardware update on the updates list...  I don't know what that was all about, but I think it was a red herring - I mention it here though because it was really strange that anything was affected pre-OS, if you see what I mean.

Eventually I worked out it was KB2862330 (I googled for all the update names and people were already having problems with this one).  Obviously I have used System Restore, but if there are any log files that I have that might be useful to you just let me know.  I gather this has something to do with USB drivers, and I use some fairly unusual (to most people I guess) USB devices in this machine - virtual COM ports and various things that have built-in USB communications - Logic Analysers and Oscilloscopes and things like that).
