There has been a development. I decided to see if this Native host/user defibed issue was anything to do with .net. So I repaired .net4 and downloaded .dotnet 4.5.

I now get messages in my action centre (should that be inaction centre?) that I have downloads waiting for me. I clicked on Windows update and after a while it reported a list of downloads, but nothing else. I then tried update again and got the same error message as before, 800B0100.

Maybe I should get on with suing Microsoft for breach of contract? Or even breach of promise as they told me I would be amazed at what Windows 7 and I can do together...........

I ran the fix it from the above link. It did work! Sitting Bull got of his backside this time (reference to Native Host.....) All excited I ran the update. Failed, same error message. I then checked and my version is 7.5.7601 17514 but it is dated for 2010 so this is probably not the latest? I restarted and tried the update again, same result. I am able to manually update MSE though, that had stopped working so I do fee a soupçon of progress has been made.

Is it possible to delete C:\windows\system32\wua??? and replace them with files downloaded or off the original installation disc?

Now last night I found 

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 and being in an adventurous mood decided to embark upon the longest cmd input session in the world (DOS is dead, long live DOS - its worse that running a Linux Terminal) anyway. I followed the instructions and with a bit of patience and cutting and pasting got through it. Some components failed to load/run. I noted them down (please forgive any notation errors, it was pretty late).

Those that did NOT run:

I was offered Net Help 2182 but could not find it and tiredness took over, that and an aching heart. Should these be installed? If so how? I am wondering if there is a corruption in the wua??? series which windows has tried to repair hence waueng1.dll but for some reason my pc is still trying to read the old version.

It seems odd to me that Microsoft can effectively wash their hands of these problems. Normally if one makes a purchase that turns out not to be fit for purpose one has recourse to several action.  The least Microsoft could do is provide an analyses tool which actually identifies the problem files and issues.

It is strange to me that I cannot do an upgrade re-install and cannot repair this user defined break point.

Once the community (in this case your good self), whatever happened to Anil? have tried is appears to me only reasonable that the encumbrance falls squarely at the door of Microsoft.  Is there no way of referring this to them without throwing good money after bad?

I have been using Microsoft products for may years, since DOS actually and have always paid for the various issues of Windows (except 2000 and Vista, I gave those a miss) and am extremely disappointed that I seem to have been dealing with a company that simply doesn't care if its products work or not or if its customers are satisfied. I would be very happy if you were able to share my thoughts with Microsoft.

Anyway, let us prey for a minor miracle and that this latest batch of logs throws up a solution.
