Windows 8.1 error: "thread stuck in device driver"

After installing the Windows 8.1 update without issue, every time I turn on my computer a screen appears that saying that there was an error when the last session ended, and that the issue pertains to "thread_stuck_in_device_driver". This has occurred every time for the last 6 days, and I have used system restore and Windows Update and the issue still remains. Has anyone found a solution to a similar problem?

Thanks, Jarred

The Dell support page offers a few things to check, but says if all else fails, replace the video card.

Maybe replacing the video card is worth it to get rid of all the headaches.

THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER

This Blue Screen error indicates that a device driver-almost always a video card driver-is stuck waiting for something (usually a hardware operation) to happen. Most of you have probably seennv4_disp.sys associated with this Blue Screen.

  1. Ensure the video drivers are updated to the latest Dell version.
  2. The system BIOS is fully up-to-date.
  3. If both the video driver and the system BIOS are fully up-to-date, check with the manufacturer for recent driver updates.
  4. As a last resort, try exchanging the video card.

Note: Reinstalling Windows is not likely to prevent this error from reoccurring.

I had the same problem, and fixed it by disabling "Fast Startup" under the Power Options - "Change what happens when I push the power button."  Instant fix.

ok. Does uninstalling that way as shown cause any prblems? After uninstalling you can download a fresh one and install again right?

Please do help me go through the process. Been trying things for days and still not been able to resolve it.

    Thanks

    Hi Jarred,

    1. What is the make and model of the PC?
    2. Are you able to boot to the desktop normally?

You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused the Windows operating system to stop unexpectedly.  It may very well be a defective video card driver issue.

I would suggest you to follow these steps and check.

    a. Press Windows key + X from desktop and choose Device Manager.

    b. Check if you are seeing a yellow exclamation next to Display Adapaters.

    c. If you find a yellow exclamation mark, then can right-click on the device and click on Properties to check the device status for any error.

I would suggest you to update the video card driver and also other drivers which are failing from manufacturer's website.

    Download and install drivershttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/all-drivers

Let us know if it helps. If the issue persists, please reply, we will be glad to assist you further.

I did this and there's a flag at Bluetooth audio device. I tried troubleshooting and it says to reinstall that driver but it won't do it. What can I do?

Did uninstalling the AMD radeon drivers through device manager (like shown below) cause any problems?

Have the same issue since I upgraded to windows 8.1 and been trying to find a proper solution to this.

    Hi Vinay_y,

I can't remember if I uninstalled the AMD Radeon drivers this way, but I did download the AMD Radeon installer from the Dell support site, and after I ran it, it resolved my sleep and thread_stuck_in_device_driver problems.
